HanStone Quartz Countertop Seam

Hello, I recently had a HanStone quartz countertop installed by StoneSource and am very unhappy with my seam. The actual cut of the two pieces is very jagged and the gap is wide enough for my fingernail to fit between. I complain, and they come and fill it with a different color 3 times now. I told them I think they need to recut the pieces as they are very jagged and try to get them closer together but I am being told that quartz is always jagged when cut and this is all normal. I shared a photo of my sisters perfect quartz seam from IKEA and was put in my place as this guy has been doing this for so many years and what do I know....

Can someone tell me if I am expecting too much? I guess I should not have bought white quartz!? There is apparently no such thing as a perfect seam on white quartz?

The first photo shows how jagged the same was after the 2nd refill, it's no smoother but still very visible.

It has nothing to do with white quartz ... you have a sh*tty contractor and fabricator, that care more about profits and have no pride in their work.

Send them a link to this thread once some of the Pros here have replied. Tell your GC and installer that this thread will appear every time someone googles their name. Will they be proud of their work then?

Stand back 36” and take a photo. That is the distance from which you judge. Not a macro zoom. Even up extreme close, it’s not horrible. Just a bit chippy. No, it isn’t perfect. You’re not going to get perfect. You’re going to get average and good enough.

Sorry, Melissa, I can't make any sense out of what you're describing. Perhaps you could draw something, take a picture of the drawing and post it? The more rounded the edge, the less likely the chipping.

I know there has to be a seam because the slab is just short of the L shape piece that needs to be there. We have already purchased 3 slabs. It's not just the seam but the extra piece (especially in person) stands out because the color doesn't match. I thought the quartz slabs would be the same but this piece has more of a yellow hue and stands out. The fabricator never even explained to us where the seams would be. I would have asked them to place in in the corner at an angle. Definitely a lack of communication and when you save up and spend this kind of money you want to be happy and not see this every time you go in the kitchen.

@DeWayne - the OP said she bought 3 or 4 slabs. Given the size of the kitchen pictured, that is not ”trying to use minimal material as the first criteria”. Stop always blaming the homeowner in your posts. To the OP - we see on this forum many, many posts on this same topic of the Quartz pattern not flowing across the seam. Most look much more glaring than yours. I think you’ll get used to it once the kitchen is fully set up and lived in. I don’t see how that section can be made to flow perfectly without having to start over from scratch. Even if they brought in a new slab, it is unlikely to match across the seam since Quartz slabs are not made that way except for a few specific patterns that can be ordered grain matched. You would have had to know that ahead of time, and those patterns would be more costly. Most people do not opt for them, and are fine with a slight mismatch. There is a school of thought that the perfection seen in design magazines and Instagram (often photoshopped) have created unrealistic expectations for homeowners.

I think the seam is fine, but there is no excuse for chippy edges. That is incompetence or too cheap to buy new blades.

Yes, too cheap to buy new blades. I doubt they intend to remedy this. You are dealing with people who care about nothing but "do it as fast as possible, take the money and run".

For those who want a white countertop, Glacier White Corian is a far better choice. You will see NO SEAM at all as seams hide well on Corian. I have to know where mine are and turn on very bright lights to find my seam.

You are all right about them not caring, they have come to refill the seam 3 times now. They do the same thing but expect different results.

When the fixer was over and I asked him, how would you feel if this is your brand new counter top and you had this seam. He said "I would never get quartz" and then moved our coffee pot and Britta right on top of it to "hide" it.

And @greendesigns, the photo is not taken very close up. You can see the shadow of my phone, I'm not zooming in or anything.

That's not a bad seam. If you want inconspicuous, get Corian.

We are dealing with the same issue. Our Handstone counter has a J seam. The majority of it has been epoxied and it looks fine except for a curved 6 inches which is open enough to put my fingernail in. Twice now we have had the fabricator in to look at it. They think we should be happy with their terrible work. Sadly, I have seen a counter with a j seam and you would never know that it is even there so I know it can be done. Our fabricator said that since he couldn't see the one that I saw, he couldn’t comment.. just pathetic.
