Remodeling Flooring Design Dilemma

Help with Stairs

We just replaced all of our upstairs rooms (bedrooms, office, etc.), and hallway from carpet to Laminate (wood looking ) planks and are looking to do the same with the stairs.

The threads will be in the same planks as the ones we have in the hallway (please see pix below), and we will have white risers.

Dilemma: The balusters are on the non- carpeted threads, and the remainder of the threads are carpeted. Although we have not checked under the carpeted area of the stairs, I'm pretty sure that it's not wood.

We do NOT have it in the budget to redo the stairs completely, so that option is out.

Wanted to reach out to all your wonderful people out there to see if you have any suggestions on how we can accomplish the stair makeover without removing the balusters.

Should I paint/stain the threads where the balusters sit on white (since a perfect match of color may not be possible with the new laminate), or?

What is the hand rail? Oak? I'd paint the hand rail and the exposed below a soft black and not wring my hands. Frankly, I'd skip matching the treads as a totally exposed wood stair is a bit unsafe. Get a beautiful runner installed in a cap/band and move on. You can select from ANY lovely broadloom......patterned, not patterned.....etc.

In a soft black below, with white risers. Add the runner : )

I used LVP on my basement stairs I love them and IMO the laminste should have stairnosing to match and i think a muchb better choice than trying to match the color with real wood.

This should have been done as the stairs were being built/remodeled. Going to be difficult to do now that things are finished. I'd remove much of what is there and add a board (or boards) shaped like this. They need to be mitered into the risers, not just applied on top of what's there now. And the skirtboards and base should be integrated. What's there now looks like someone worked on the stair and then the base trim was added later. And the light switch by the door should have been moved to the left away from the casing.

I so agree . There is no way to understand any of this.I think you want your little house to look something like the first pic. If so you really need an architect . Any help here will only come with drawings to scale and you need to do a lot of checking to see if what you want is actually doable both desgn wise and code wise where you live.If I am even close to guessing what you are planning you are adding a 2 storey addition to the front of the house is thta right?

A runner should be selected with any other rugs adjacent. Meaning it should blend with the rest of your decor :)

Hand rail is Maple.

The only reason did not want to go the runner route on the stairs is because the upstairs are laminate planks and all of downstairs will be either tiled or stone. Didn't think incorporating a third (carpet/runner) on the stairs would be visually appealing. :)

You have NO rugs planned on stone first floor. No visual anchors to seating anywhere? entry rug? There is nothing wrong with a neutral and textured runner between these two floors. And better question is why switch flooring on first floor at all? Match the second floor!
