What to do with Awkward Kitchen/ Living Room Transition

We are trying to finalize plans for a kitchen renovation which involves moving our dining table out of it’s current space and into an actual dining room that we have been using as a play room the last several years. Now we can’t figure out what to do with the space that we have been using as an “eat-in” area up until now. This area, between our kitchen peninsula and Living Room has no wall space. It has the kitchen peninsula (with stools eventually) on one side, a sliding glass door to the deck on one side, the doors out to the garage and basement on one side, and a step down into the family room on the last side. Once the kitchen renovation is done and the table is no longer thpere it seems like it will be a large amount of awkward open space, but not large enough to put a table there. one of the biggest reasons we are moving the table is because it’s hard to maneuver around with the step off to the family room there. Any suggestions as to what to do with this space? Our contractor insists it probably won’t look as awkward as we think once it’s all done, but we’re worried about a big empty, useless space. Ideas?
