Should I cut down this camphor tree?
Comments (12)I am really leaning toward removing the one in the front yard for sure, but the one in the back yard is so large it would definitely cost a pretty penny to have removed. So it will get a reprieve for now while I attack the Brazilian peppers trying to get a foothold back there. I do have some cardinals I see every year and I love those birds so I will consider planting a red bay should I remove the camphor in the back yard. I have never seen berries on the one in the front yard, maybe it takes a while for them to fruit? So I don't think the cardinals would mind if I removed that one. I kind of have my heart set on some sort of fruit tree for the front yard and I don't have much space anywhere else for a tree. The big camphor shares the back yard with a good sized loquat. I don't think any other tree could get enough sun back there. I guess I could put a red bay in the front and then when I can get the other camphor removed I can put my fruit tree in the back yard. The camphor takes up so much room that I might be able to get two fruit trees back there. I am a tree hugger and the idea of cutting down trees does bother me but I have seen what that darned punk tree has done to this state (and me, they really set off my asthma) and I don't want to contribute to helping another invasive tree. I do actually like the smell of the camphor but I don't think that's enough reason to keep it. Hey, I wonder if I could grow one bonsai size? ; ) Thanks for all the responses, You've given me some more to think about....See MoreIdeas for using a dead tree? Or should I cut it down?
Comments (21)Thank you all for the awesome ideas and links!!! The artists that paint the trees, WOW! Their work is beautiful and also gave me some more ideas. I'm thinking I might both paint it and plant the crossvines at the base. I'll likely trim off the top 1/3 of the tree though. The branches are pretty thin and brittle and will likely break. And then I'll probably paint the cut branches and use those somewhere. Wheeee! I'm curious, if anyone can answer this, I certainly don't want to send out an invitation to termites. Would painting the tree deter them? Wouldn't the paint act as a seal of sorts?...See MoreIs Fig Tree ok.....or should it be cut down?
Comments (3)bot.. camera tricks ... first two pix.. im thinking this thing is in some jungle forest.. and a huindred feet tall ... then the last pic.. not even bigger than the shed ... it is no threat to anything.. and it might live another 20 years.. i would leave it alone... and if and when it fails... so be it ... i dont get the middle pix.. with the wood supports??? its the potential of damage to something.. that 'requires' removal .. i dont see any house roof being crushed.. or cars.. or neighbors.. etc ... on the other hand.. if its irritating you.. make some firewood ... lol .. lifes too short ... ken...See MoreShould I Have This Tree Cut Down?
Comments (3)The tree is big enough that if it would fall, it would land on one my neighbors' houses. ==>>> a good neighbor would not allow threats to their neighbors on their property ... eh??? its not uncommon.. when you drastically change the culture of a forest.. or a property with a lot of trees ... some damage might happen to what was left ... all the air currents and paths changed .. etc ... so it might not surprise me.. that you got some damage from wind ... in this case, a storm ... perhaps even ... that branch was somehow damaged by the removal of the others ... but it doesnt necessarily mean ... the tree is going to fall down ... perhaps an on site assessment by a certified tree surgeon would be worth it??? ... not every guy with a chainsaw is such ... https://duckduckgo.com/?q=isa+certified+tree+surgeon&t=ffcm&ia=about does the tree lean? ken...See MoreMel
