Pendant light over outdoor dining table?
Comments (3)David, If I had places to connect four or more orthagonal lines, I would do that. But the trees aren't well-situated for that, and I'm not sure about installing fee-standing poles. They might be a little too intrusive, visually. (If we went with slimmer metal poles, rather than redwood posts, they might not stand out as much. I may need to investigate how strong metal poles would have to be, and how I could get them fabricated.) The cantilevered umbrella system is a clever idea, but I think that would be too big and intrusive for what we have in mind. We have another outlet at the edge of the patio near the table. I suppose we could go with one of those under-umbrella lighting kits that would attach to the ribs of our existing market umbrella and run the cord from beneath the table to the outlet. We were hoping to have lighting that leaves the dining area open to the sky, but that may not be practical....See MoreRecommendations for Outdoor Container Trees
Comments (17)yes.. your zone makes all my winter fears go away .... does the gravel fill the whole area behind the wall??? .. or is there soil below the gravel??? how much direct sun does the area have ... is it as dark as it looks in summer??? ..... or is that an early winter dark cloudy day pic .... all this aside ... i dont know if i would like pots marring the beauty of the wall ... there is something naturally simple in how it looks right now ... whereas the pots might look so artificial it might not seem right ... just thinking outside your box ... plz do whatever pleases you ... as if that need be said ... i might just plant some trailing vinca/periwinkle or some such.. and let it cascade over the wall .. over the years ... presuming vinca minor is appropriate for your area .... good luck ... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?q=vinca+minor++over+wall&t=ffcm&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images...See MoreSmall outdoor space mostly in the shade: where to start?
Comments (7)Definitely an inspiration photo and you are right on point, it seems I love high sun, dry/arrid climate plants :-). Here is a couple pics but it is so small you can't really see much. Also all snowed in. Right now, what I know I want do is remove the trellis and replace with wood slat modern fence painted white for maximum light. We may do one wall with a cheerful abstract/geometric to cheer it up. It is a really really drab space in the winter. Something like that: https://cdn.apartmenttherapy.info/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto:eco,c_fit,w_1392,h_890/at%2Fhome-projects%2F2020-10%2FTina_Frank_patio_after__tagged I know i need some deck/patio area for dining. (we will change furniture) and grilling (smaller one than the one pictured). the corner in the back right never gets light. I would like something very tall and thin for the back wall (like bamboo or elevated horsetail grass, planted so it does not spread) and I would like it to add some curves or some visual interest through landscaping. I have tons of inspiration pics and plants but i am about 99% sure none of it would work here, per my example above....See MoreSimple makeover? Create outdoor dining/seating area?
Comments (6)Yes, use the basketball court for the floor and choose a cover suitable for your climate and your preferences. We prefer a full cover for our lounging area because every inch of shade is needed in the summer, we enjoy sitting outside when it does rain, and it helps prolong the life of our furniture which we leave out all year. The firepit I posted (Lowe's, about $430) has an adjustable flame which gets maybe 8" at most in the center so it's fine underneath if it's outside and the sides of the structure are open. It runs on propane - the tank is interchangeable with the one you use for your BBQ grill. It's taller than a coffee table, you can place drinks or plates on the rim and it can also be moved around and taken with you when you move. Sure, you can try to fit dining and the firepit on the concrete. If you decide to put lounging furniture there instead and move the table off to the side, it's better to have it on a concrete or stone pad than on the grass. Not only will mowing be easier, the grass may end up dying underneath it anyway. Yes, you'll want the stepping stones or pavers dug into the ground so they aren't a tripping hazard and laid on a base so they don't rock or sink. There are lots of videos about installing the kits and pavers. Price it all out before you begin, depending on your priorities, you may want to pay someone to install the gazebo/pergola. (BTW, you can also consider running power to it for a ceiling fan or lights!) Your yard looks so serene, I hope you end up with something you use a lot and enjoy!...See MoreEmbothrium
