if you fert your lawn ... and it appears you do.. the tree will get more fert.. than it will ever need .... just put it out of your mind.. that it will need anything more ....

now that you figured it out.. can you give us a pic of the whole tree .... is it mulched ...

also.. how is it watered.. lawn irrigation is seldom good enough.. as the trees roots are much deeper than the grass ... and you need to insure water is provided down into it root mass ... irrigation can maintain moisture at depth.. but we have to insure it is deeper .. this usually is not a moist spring issue.. but a heat of the summer problem ...

as noted.. where are you ... what is your soil.. how did you plant it ... and how did you water it last year ...

with trees.. things happen in tree time ... and stresses you are seeing now.. can date back to an event a year or two back ... which means how it was transported to seller.. to your house.. potted.. or ball and burlap.... etc ... we need to look back in time .. while perfecting conditions forward ...

how you water in your location.. in your weather.. in your soil ... is left to you to figure out.. but hopefully we can offer some guidance to help you figure it out ....

That amount of bark exfoliation is atypical but in this case, doesn't look like cause for concern. The tree (for whatever reason) hasn't exfoliated recently (or ever) and this is the first shedding in a long time. The main bark exfoliation season where I live is August to September...you should see more typical patches flake off then (or same time, a year after).

You haven't provided a location...that will be very helpful in providing watering advice. In the absence of a location, a deep watering of 5-10 gallons over the rootball, 1-2 times a week this summer should be fine. Unless you live in a really dry area, it shouldn't need to be more frequent than that and next year, water only during summer droughts (no decent rain for ~2 weeks).

Hey guys thanks for the response hey I’m an hour south of Chicago in Illinois but the soil is sandy and clay now the company that had planted em said 5-10 gallons a week but we went through a drought n I called them because a couple leaves started to brown and the bark started to peel and they said asked how much water I was putting down and I said 30 gallons and they said o no put 100 gallons down per tree per week

So this will be their second full growing season?

They will require less frequent watering this year as they will have established themselves with deeper and wider root systems. This year, they'll only need water if it's been dry for ~2 weeks. At that point 50 gallons over a 8' diameter area once/wk will be plenty.

In a drought, I might have done 5-10 gallons twice/wk directly on the rootball. 100 gallons is ridiculous for a 1st year tree. Plane trees are drought tolerant and will shed leaves as needed during hot & dry spells.

That’s a relief! So my trees don’t look like they’re dying and I don’t need to be putting a stupid amount of water on them?

If you were putting 30 gal a week on the tree, I can't imagine it was getting so dry that damage was done. Perhaps in very sandy soil it might have but even then....

Not easy to see but it appears I see swelling leaf buds in the picture, a sure sign of a living tree.

If the tree was very dry at times last year, the bark could be thinner than normal because of little growth last season. Now that the tree is swelling may explain the excess amount of sloughing off. Just a guess on my part though.

I'm not a Plane tree guy but generally, tree's that were under stress last season, can exhibit 'out of the ordinary' growth features this season.

Worst case scenario, there could be some die back on some of the branches. But if it's making buds, it's putting out the effort needed for recovery. :o)
