Ginkgo not leafing out

Planted a ginkgo last year in mid summer because it was 75% off. It seemed sick and the leaves fell off with the slightest touch. Its now late April and not a single bud yet. I did take my knife and scrape the branches and there is green underneath. I gave it some fish fertilizer last week. Should I do anything else to it? Or is it slowly dying? I'm in zone 7a in central Oklahoma.

I am in a very different climate, but I can tell you that I have about 30 Ginkgo and probably 25% are fully leafed out, 50% are partially leafed out and the other 25% not leafed out at all. So my best advice is to be patient.

Ginkgos are late-leafers. My 12 yr-old's buds are getting bigger, but not yet opening or even green.

If the central growing point of the new shoot is alive, it will continue from there - if not the plant will resprout from auxillary dormant buds or adventious (spontaneous) buds. We're in Akron and our HIGHS haven't even broken 32 since Thursday. It's 29 right now. It's not gonna be a pretty spring, a LOT of plants will have to re-leaf, but things should look normal by Memorial Day.

Buds, as in flower or leaf buds? If these azaleas are supposed to bud, then leaf out then I'm going to wait. Think Magnolia or Forsythia. If they are supposed to leaf out and bloom simulataneasly I still might wait. But if they should leaf out and then bloom, well then they are cashed. SO do your azaleas leaf out then bloom??

Ah the hopefulness of a gardener with a dead shrub. I'm doing the same thing with a leafless Cotinus Golden Spirit while one on the other side of the yard is fully clothed in leaves now. Tonight I bent the main branches and they were still flexible so I declared there was still hope. Yes, all Oakleaf hydrangeas here, even a 5 inch cutting in a pot, are fully leafed out now. And I'm well north of you. So sorry :(

Hi Luis -- in fact... my Pee Wee is indeed still putting out new leaves/branches now..... I just went out and shot this pic. As you can see, its blooming was over a while back. It had some nice show around June and July (I've left the spent flowers there, kind of like their dried flower look). I didn't do anything different from before... the only thing that comes to mind that might be notable is this summer has been relatively cool with plenty of rain around here.
