Does my house have *any* style?
Comments (10)Here's what I see: a simple frame house with a wing that was intentional (not added later) - the windows match - and a porch with panache. A house built by someone who knew the land and climate - it has wonderful large windows on the west and south sides to catch the winter sun. It has a porch to protect from heat of the summer afternoon sun in the west. I think, from looking at the photographs, that the trees do the same: shade the house in the summer. A house built by someone who wanted some style - those double-hung windows with their 4 vertical divided lights were quite fashionable before WWI and in your area might still have been in style in 1925. The big window with the smaller light above was very stylish about 1905, and would have had stained glass if you lived in a city. The porch columns are what would have been on a bungalow. They are also called 'arts and crafts' and were not so popular after WWI as before. The interior trim in the main rooms is very simple , but done with care. You can probably tell which wings are later by seeing where your baseboards and window and door casings are different from what is in the front room and the kitchen. The small rooms with the little windows I think are probably additions to the house when it became a duplex. From my comments, I now wonder if your house might not be as old as 1915, or 1920. Where I live ( northeastern US) by the early 1920's, the late Victorian details (your windows, moulding and porch details) had been swept away, not to be used again until the 1990's when people once again appreciated Victorian sensibilities. Sometimes those details are considered 'Prairie' the world Frank Lloyd Wright came out of, and that was popular for longer in the mid-west. I owned a house that started life as a rental in the 1920's. I found it looked best with simple early 1900's furniture, rugs and curtains. I found books and old magazines in thrift shops and flea markets to give me a better feel for the era and went with an 'Edwardian' tone although I would have preferred arts and crafts. The arts and crafts pieces I owned - pottery, linens - never felt like they belonged - my grandmother's embroidered tea towels looked right at home!...See MoreNeed suggestions to improve exterior of house
Comments (4)Your house, a mid-century ranch, has once again become a very desireable and fashionable style. It wouldn't take much to spruce yours up and make it look fresh. The first thing I'd think about is paint. The all-white look makes your house appear boring and a bit dead. Some colour would definitely give your house a lift. Why not think about a warm grey shade, or perhaps an adobe colour for the main body of the house with a very dark brown on the roof trim. Those colours would work well with the brick and add some definition. The dark paint along the roof would play up the roof angles and add some linear definition. The brick veneer is in keeping with the style of the house, and also appropriate to its period. I'd think carefully before deciding to remove it. The metal framed windows, while lacking much character or depth, are also appropriate to the house. If you need to replace them, I'd look for similar metal-framed windows in either a horizontal sliding configuration or casements. Vinyl windows aren't really appropriate to the style or period of the house. The next thing I'd do is work on the landscaping. Get rid of the tall jungle at the front. You really want to accentuate the horizontal. Low-growing swaths of shrubs and ground cover with a strategically placed multi-trunked tree or small grouping of trees (think palms, perhaps -- or something else with interesting branching) to provide a pleasant asymetrical balance might be good. While the circular drive was probably fashionable at the time your house was built, they are no longer in vogue. I'd think about jack-hammering it up and replacing it with a simple drive (perhaps exposed aggregate concrete) to the garage and some sort of landscaping. Play up the mid-century styling of your house. Don't try to change it to something it's not. Simple clean lines are the key. You might want to look for a few books specializing in this genre of house. There are a number out there. Your house has a strong resemblance to the Eichler style. There quite a few books on Eichler homes. You might also want to look at the link below for book available from Amazon on Ranch houses. You may find inspiration amongst its pages. Comments (17)Thank you, we're really happy with the way everything came together. The backsplash looks much better in person, of course, and I just love it! we chose the color rainstorm in a crackle finish. Comments (17)Oh my, would so love to be the proud owner of this! The interior photos show enough to know that this could be beautiful . I can see why you would like to work on it. I haven't any suggestions other than a cohesive colour scheme ! I can only dream of such a characterful home. Many styles made it to Australia, but not this and even less variation of quality made it to regional areas....and even less 2 storey homes. I can but dream.... Sigh........See MoreRelated Professionals
