Comments (11)Too bad about your Earth Angel hosta-haven. I don't think it was a squirrel, skunk or racoon who did the deed. I think it was a ground hog/woodchuck. I've seen them come out and roam around at dusk and the damage that was done could have happened right before dark - don't know how late you were out in your garden that night. I know many of you folks have huge gardens so what I do and have to do may not be practical for all. I spray a small animal deterrant called Bobbex every spring when the plants start coming up and any time I disturb the soil to put in a new plant or reposition an old plant. When soil is disturbed, squirrels think something good is buried there and will begin digging away. But this product works extremely well for me by keeping the squirrels and rabbits at bay - even voles. It lasts a while too since it is rain proof. It stinks to high heaven but the strong initial smell dissipates in a few days. It's not cheap but I would have no hostas or other perennials if I didn't use this stuff so for me it's priceless....See MoreEarth Angel and Eskimo Pie
Comments (6)Critter--you and obviously have more in common than a first name, I see. I LOVE my whiskey barrels with hosta! And, I LOVE my Earth Angel! I have a new EA in a barrel, planted just this year and, as I suspect, I will love it there as yours is doing beautifully. The only difference I see between our planting technique is the medium I use is pine bark mulch, ground through a wood chipper, and composted horse manure mix, with the larger contribution being the pine. Bern--that is an excellent suggestion. I wish I were starting over with my barrels or RATHER wish I had thought of that, myself, earlier on--with the 26 barrels I have!! While my oldest E.A. is not in a barrel, here is pic. of it, and btw, it's one of my TOP five favorite hosta!! The leaves of this one are just HUGE, and it gets virtually NO direct sunlight!! For a comparison of leaf size--that is 'Fragrant Bouquet' to the bottom right and 'Blue Umbrellas' upper right! I've never had 'E.P.', though, threedogs.., so I can't help you there but 'E.A.' has matured very quickly for me--and in the 'no sun' location has not multiplied, which I gather is normal for the big ones..they get larger leaves though, when in more shade, with less increase of eyes! Some specimens--I actually prefer that way!!!...See MoreEarth Angel Earth Angel be mine tonight....

Comments (13)That eye has been stable about 4 years. I have guardian angel. It's center starts out white and turns green later in the season. This one remains green from begging to end. i think I will divide it to see if direct sun turns it yellow. Then it would be like beckoning. ...Oh well. I've done that a number of times. Recreated ones that already exist. it was totally streaked but the seed is not viable. So I stopped trying after 10 years...See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
