Putting American flags on police cars sparks backlash in Laguna Beach

Avert your eyes if you are triggered by American symbols!.

Stars an stripes, oh my!

A decision to affix an American flag graphic to the side of freshly painted Laguna Beach police cars is dividing residents, who are alternately praising the image as patriotic or panning it as too aggressive.

After hearing the criticism and acknowledging that the image they approved didn’t quite match the final results, officials agreed to reconsider their February decision to paint the Laguna Beach Police Department’s fleet of 11 squad cars. The City Council will take up the issue again at its Tuesday meeting.

“People are screaming that the American flag on a police car is somehow or another ... hurting people’s feelings who might be immigrants or visitors,” said Councilman Peter Blake. “People are actually ridiculous enough to bring up comments about our cop cars having American flags on them.”

Artist Carrie Woodburn went to the podium at the March 19 council meeting and said it was “shocking to see the boldness of the design” when the newly painted Ford Explorers rolled out.

I must be missing whatever is causing offence. As it stands, I think it's quite cheerful. Perhaps there is a backstory that explains the problem?

From the LA Times

“They are so filled with hatred toward this ... office of the president of the United States and the current occupant of that office,” she said, “that they cannot see through their current biases to realize that a police vehicle with the American flag is the ultimate American expression.”...

“There was like a little panic going on, and I was like, ‘What’s happening?’ ” Prelitz said. The hubbub, he discovered, was over a cluster of police cars that had arrived at the scene. “When one of them’s there, it works. But all of a sudden, I saw, wow, when there are three, maybe four of them together, folks thought it was a SWAT team, federal agents. So it had a very striking, strong impact, so much so that I think there might be some unintended consequences.”

Rina, anti-American sentiment is rampant of the Left-mostly the socialist, open-borders, anti-LEO progressives who fundamentally hate America.

They are easily mistaken for federal agents?

When local or state law enforcement becomes confused with Federal authorities, it is a short step to assumption of federal/militarypowers

Pretty ugly to my eyes but I don’t see the objection to the flag itself.

Carro, thanks for a reply from your point of view, but I've never seen the slightest sign that the American left is anti-American. It is very clear to me that they love America just as much as anyone else. They might be wary of the misuse of symbols, or the use of symbols to cause dissent, but I don't think this is that sort of thing. Perhaps the impact of several such cars turning up at once giving a bit of an alarming crisis impression is more to the point.

Sylvia, do federal agents use similarly marked cars? Or is your point that the cars would be better marked with a state flag, if there is such a thing? That would make sense.

Trying to imagine if our metro or provincial police in Johannesburg used similarly marked cars it would be a problem. Hard to imagine as the aesthetics of the countries are fundamentally different, and deep as our divisions are we don't accuse each other of being anti-South African, on the whole. Very interesting.

ETA: And then of course the US has the state/federal dichotomy going. We don't really have anything like that, either. Not many arguments about who is stepping on whose toes.

******************************

Why would the American flag be hurtful or offensive to an immigrant risking their life to come here? or a visitor who paid money to come to America? They come for what the American Flag stands for. This is just the home grown Anti- Americans undermining by using the immigrants and visitors as their excuse.

I live near Laguna Beach and this is blown way out of proportion. A handful of people objected and now the right has latched onto this story and made it into way more of a deal than it ever was.

I don't know a single person in my community who has a problem with these cars yet this has been gleefully "shared" multiple times on Facebook by my right wing family members located all over the country.

Interestingly, during the Clinton administration my right wing dad would have said this a step closer to marshal law being declared, because the individual police forces are not federally controlled and this is branding them as a federal agency.

As a graphic design I don't think it works, too cartoony and the flag motif distracts from the most important message which is that this is a law enforcement vehicle.

I wouldn't have a problem with an American flag being incorporated but this is too much of a distraction imo.

ETA that's *only* a critique of the execution of the design.

Truthfully? I bet it's because the word ICE makes persons who are not authorized to live in the US permanently, and those who have a hand in sheltering them, jumpy.

Take a look at the word "POLICE". "ICE" is in red. I would bet good money on this conclusion.

Before the word "patriot" was weaponized by the right to mean that only they are the true Americans, I remember when it meant a proud citizen. I've learned to cringe at the word "patriot" now because I associate it with the Tea Party and other far RW groups who view the rest of us as unAmerican. So maybe some see the flag in the same way.

Ah, see what I mean? Chi posted this while I was typing. The story has been weaponized by the right.

And margievank is calling those who object to the flag "home grown anti-Americans".

Like Chi, I live in the area. I agree it was a minor local issue exploited by the right to explode on a national level. The graphic is awful. Not for the flag specifically, but for the overall design aesthetics. It looks like something an amateur would make on a home computer (it may have been!). The car in the background has a simple design, but you can tell it was done by a graphic designer. The newer design is just gaudy ugly.

If I was in that area I would have an additional complaint. The cost of adding color to what should be a black and white decal. Last year I was trying to find a banner that was three colored, black/white/pink and was surprised at how much additional adding the pink cost.

The idea that anyone that opposes what the government does is anti-American only means that people have not learned how many times in the past people have opposed to what the government was doing and it turned out the people were correct. Like the Japanese internment camps the people did not always have their voices heard but at least they stood up for what was right.

I get the impression that it is what I thought it was, a local, small-scale fuss blown out of proportion. Yes, the design could be better, and yes, maybe a symbol that actually represented the police force itself would have been more appropriate. I must say, if I were a cop, I'd prefer not to be in a car that highlighted "lice", but then maybe I'm sensitive. Bowing out of this discussion now. Thanks, all.

You know that guy who gets into an accident, picks up a couple body panels at the junkyard, puts them on but never gets around to painting them? That’s my critique of the execution of the design.

The police in my teeny N CA town, just got a number of new vehicles with special paint details that look very much like the vehicles in Laguna. Too flashy in my opinion and remind me of graphics I've seen used on Faux Fox News.

It's actually four colours: red, white, blue, black.

$$$$

To be fair I also dislike the DARE branded cars and in Canada the Bait Car branded ones.

I guess I just like my police vehicles to be solemn, traditional, and utilitarian!!

Nah, it's "ice" that's highlighted, not "lice". The blue & white star design pulls "pol" together, and the red & white striping sans stars pulls "ice" together. Plus, the red is bold and pops.

It's not a big controversy locally from what I find in local online stories. Most complaints seem to be minor. And many seem puzzled because while a flag design was the decision, it wasn't *this* one.

"There was some confusion over which of the two remaining logos was the winner. But police department and city officials said the selected option was the American flag — albeit a muted version of the current design."

In this country the flag is often used as a cudgel by people on the right.

That is what this looks like to me.

If anyone says they think those huge decals are gaudy and tasteless and a waste

of money, it proves they don't loooooove their country like we do.

The right loves empty symbolism.

I was always told that Mom and apple pie = America.

Now you are telling me that rather aggressive police (represented by the newly designed police cars) = America.

How things have changed.

Laguna Beach votes to keep American flag on police cars

By Bradford Betz| Fox News

A Southern California coastal city voted Tuesday to keep the American flag on its police cars despite some residents’ objections that it might offend immigrants.

The Laguna Beach City Council voted Tuesday night to retain a new logo for its 11 police vehicles that uses stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors.

Some in the small community thought the flashy red, white and blue decal was too aggressive and flashy while others were surprised that anyone would object to the American flag. The council considered whether to keep the design or choose another.

In a crowded council chamber on Tuesday, virtually everyone in the room raised their hand when asked if they supported the design, video shows. When a lonely hand dissented, the crowd could be heard chuckling.
