Who do I call about a whole-house fan?
Comments (3)My house has central air but I have reasons I think installing a whole-house fan is a Really Good Idea. If someone is interested, I'll go into them (The first sentence will be "I live in Michigan"). The reason I thought about an electrician is that it seems like the hardest parts of the project are the electrical parts - hooking up a new circuit in the attic, dropping wire for new switches - whereas the HVAC parts are really more carpentry projects than anything. Adding attic vents is something I think of roofers doing, actually. So maybe I could have an HVAC guy do an evaluation and some hourly-rate advice, and maybe some attic vents as well. Then I could start it as a DIY project and see where I get stuck....See Morewhole house water softener, which one do i need?
Comments (2)Any kind of multi shower heads or body sprayers? City water or well? If well, any iron? A simply formula is hardness x usage x # of people x 7 days. So 14 x 65 X 4 X 7=25,480 grain removed every 7 days. With a 1.5 CF softener you will have 30,000 grain capacity to work with....See MoreI want to install all porcelain tiles inside my home, where do i start
Comments (5)I would get myself over to Yelp, and research local flooring stores that sell product AND do installation. Read through all the reviews. Get a comfort level that you can work with the folks in the store, and that they stand behind their products and work. Even more important when you're doing the whole house--it's a big project! When things go wrong, and you can read through many, many threads about that, the manufacturer points at the installation, and the installer points at the manufacturer. It is an uphill battle, it can get $$$legal$$$, and when I put flooring in our whole downstairs, I was (rarely for me) less concerned about saving $1/sf than I was concerned about not having anything go wrong, and in the event something did go wrong, having a long-standing store with LEVERAGE over the manufacturer to reduce my risk. I'm glad I went the way I did, and after all my questions, I went with the decades-old family-run store with the great reputation across town. They made great recommendations, and made sure to offer me all my options/upgrades up front, and didn't try to talk me out of anything that was important to me: (e.g. I asked for no quarter round to have a sleeker look of baseboard meeting flooring). Be sure to ask about additional costs for moving furniture, and which crew they will send. In my case, they sent their "best" crew (most experienced), and I agreed to wait for them. They picture-framed our hearth (mitered corners-looks great), and "beefed-up" a stair step that leads to our front door, making it wider/safer--at no extra charge. There are things that a homeowner might not know about (cheap glue?), moisture issues if you're on a slab, etc. These are just my thoughts and experience. You can also read through a lot of threads in this flooring forum to see what goes wrong for folks, and get a better idea of what questions to ask. Good luck!...See MoreNew to me home...where do I start?
Comments (10)Thanks all. Funny, I'm so used to living in 1k square feet in Boston, I have no idea what the rest of the country views as normal. I'm excited to have a proper spare bedroom, home office/3rd bedroom and a workout room/4th bedroom! Nice thing with old houses, not a nickle of wasted space. Artwork is one of those emotional buys for me. I wander by, I see, I buy. It's never planned. Particularly now, I don't think I'd feel comfortable cruising thru art galleries. But I get the idea. Great idea about the notebook. I also need to inventory my stuff. 1/2 of my hard furniture was never unpacked from the move and is still in moving blankets. I think I know what I have :) I do have Home Architect software somewhere, I'll have to dig it up, thank you for the layout suggestion. I LOVE designing. And I have used the painters tape layout trick on a previous kitchen :) Luckily, all 4 baths (2 of which I will almost never use) are in great shape and I think only need towels and smallwares. But I'll check. Kitchen will be a renovation point 2-5 years down the line, so I'm probably not even going to bother painting, it's fine. I'll ignore it for now. Good point about the furniture. I only buy the good stuff now that I'm an adult. I've been reading up on the Keeping Room forum. I only wish Schnadig was still in business. My last couch from them (a hand me down) lasted almost 20 years. God I loved that couch. Since artwork will be later, sounds like color scheme, then rugs, then LR furniture. I think it's the LR that I may need new rugs....I'll be excited to unwrap them in the new house..they will look stunning against the floors :) I also read prioritize public spaces and bedroom first. I risk getting paint on the refinished HWF in 2 of the bedrooms, but so be it. Keep 'em coming! Thank you PS...Great idea about the color palette. Using Adobe Color to hone in on some palettes. Fun stuff....See Morerobo (z6a)
