Colors: Exterior Vinyl Update from 80's Shed
We are looking into updating our existing cedar wood exterior with vinyl. We definitely want the front most part of the house to be Board and Batten. Unsure of the colors to use with this style of house!
Thinking of a lighter grey with a beige or lighter trim, but also like the idea of dark grey or beige for the whole house. We are all over the place...please help!

5 years agoWow, ......vinyl over cedar. Rreally? Are you going to address the windows on the house too?
Mastic vinyl has board and batten but there are limits to any manuf. pieces, so there sill be seams to think about in advance.
Make sure you do the special details ar the roof line to make it appear more realistic.
Board and Batten looks good when there are details like you see below and the vast expanse is broken up because frankly there will be some "waviness" in the vinyl siding over time.

Comments (27)I also found another project I did, where they used wood for the decking, and top railing cap with feeney cable rail as well. White timber tech post sleeves. I made a pergola to go over the deck and they bought one of these really cool colored sunsail awning to go onto. Like someone else mentioned the side stairs could be better with divided landings, and wider. As far as the siding I know its very expensive but hardy plank would last the longest with minimal maintenance. I also think that if something was done with bottom of deck, either columns, enclosed porch with deck underneath would change the whole appearance of the house, along with different rails....See MoreUpdate my exterior paint from the 80s:)
Comments (13)Hi, yes You are in a big hurry, but don't hurry too much. The house has good visual basics, we only have to free them using right color. I don't know why but I realised that You have to slightly lighten facade and repaint shutters to other not hot color, such as this color used in Deauville, the place of American Film festival is held yearly. This color is very stylish and its difficultm not simple, in its best way. Alternatively, You can use off-gray but for me its dull. Also, the basic columns of the fences are too slim. Use something to thick them as I showed on the sketch. I would leave them in whites and additional fences on stairs are needed. Also the backyard fence can be cleaned, polished and painted with this "Deauville green" color, it also would be very stylish and make a reference to a good taste)) Overall, I woulld use 2 colors + white fences. I even would not touch the bricks (You can wash them and cover with defence liquid), or You can make this other year. You have a lot of work this time so don't try to do ALL simultenously. Comments (9)I sort of like the colors you already have. I would add a nice bright color to your door, and some nice bright outdoor furniture to your porch, and brand new landscaping. The steps are so wide, you can easily add colorful pots to them., too. Is that just a patch of blacktop in front, or is that part of a circle drive. If its just a patch remove it. If its part of your circle drive, then have it resurfaced. Comments (20)Yes, the plants are a constant work in progress with the shade and the sloped yard and deer that devour everything. Once we got the pachysandra growing densely that helped. Deer don't touch the boxwoods. We have rhododendrons, but they are high since the deer trimmed off all the lower growth. We had some rot, but the painters brought a carpenter who replaced all the bad boards. We've also had to do control for wasps and ants. Keep ahead of the bugs. Figured out we had insects when the woodpecker started on the siding! Maintenance versus value is the decision. You should learn from a real estate broker if changing to vinyl will devalue your home. Making the fixes and restaining should cost as much as refacing. To my thinking, the color of your stain currently doesn't work with the other finishes or maybe it's just very 70's 80's design. I wonder if there is a way to get it back to a more natural finish.
