Size of television stand?

We will be moving to a new house which has a very large family room, where our television will be. DH is seizing the opportunity to buy a BIG television, at least 60" diagonal. He does not want it to be wall-mounted. (I don't know why. Who can decipher the male mind?) The tv will not be in a corner nor over the fireplace.

Anyway, I guess I will be searching for some sort of stand. Does the stand need to be longer than the tv? I googled a 60" diagonal tv and see that it's actually about 52 inches wide.

My style is very plain. Existing wood furniture I have now is mission-style. I do not want a heavy room divider/entertainment center. How would a sofa table be?

Yes, for the best proportions, the console should be 25% longer than the tv. I think a sofa table might work, but you will have to contend with hiding the cords.

Height of middle of TV should be at eye level when seated on sofa. So a sofa table would be too high. Take a look at BDI TV consoles. They are the best and if not in your price range, you can learn a lot about elements to look for in a lower priced unit.

If you're compelled to seek balance, I think this is the wrong house for you. Relax and try to go with the flow of the architecture. My mother had a hard time with imbalance but I edged her out of it over time. Your other option is to create what the English call a "snug" under the stairs with a group of chairs and the TV. That leaves your big area open for doing more of a balanced arrangement with a pair of sofas, chairs, game table, casegoods, etc.

We have open great room going on and like to watch from the kitchen and other areas too. So we have 75". On the sofa we're usually laying down so we need to look up more. This is what we have now that we brought from a prior house and repurposed, but its the wrong style. Do you think the gray RH would work there? It would take up most of that wall centered between the corner and the soffit. I could push the sofa back slightly towards the hall. And get rid of the bamboo tree.

We bought the complimentary Samsung sound bar this year that mates up with our Samsung tv. We have it hooked up with Bluetooth and put it directly behind our chairs and we can hear it so much better than in the front under the TV. We can switch back and forth with the TV speakers if anyone else is here watching TV. We had full surround sound in the previous homes but we didn't want all that. The one soundbar with all in one is just right. We could get a second one to put under the TV to have sound coming from front and back but for now it's fine. Actually our Samsung TV has quite good sound quality directly from the TV.

80" could be correct for the TV and you can purchase them from Wayfair, Overstock, IKEA etc. However, depending on what you want the purpose of the wall to be 80" may only be part of your solution so don't rush, ...think this through and come back for help if needed.

I should have said that DH wants the tv over the fireplace because he wants it high. (He sprawls out in a big-man recliner, all leaned back, and he thinks higher is better. I said no way is the tv going to be that high.) So the height is going to be an issue.

I may have to put my foot down and say if we are going to get a 60+ inch tv, we're going to set it on a stand at a height to suit me.

My brother has a high TV and he says leaning back in his recliner, he falls asleep so easily.

It really seems that everyone has a different opinion on what height for TV.

I am currently trying to decide on what to have under our wall mounted TV. (I think my first post might have been back in the fall discussing this. ). I have gone full circle from looking at actual stands, media cabinets, to consoles, sideboards, buffets, etc etc. The only point that seems to hold true is that the TV stand/console/sofa table should definitely be wider than the TV.

As far as using a sofa table or something open with shelves, the chords can either be hidden in the wall, or more simply something can be placed in front (a vase, an ottoman, books, )
