Curb appeal problem. We don't use our front door
Comments (19)What I would do: (and what would help with curb appeal), is a larger front porch. Then you can place a bench out there--sort of an outdoor mud room. But you don't want folks through the front door, I understand. I'm curious where you live? And you still haven't answered about who are these people who come to your front door, but you'd prefer to have them come through the mudroom. I'm thinking about my own home. We accept UPS packages, the plumber, kids' friends, my friends, the grandparents.... all through the front door. We do have a foyer there though, for the removal of wet things. The only people who actually enter through the other door are kids who are VERY familiar with our household (dogs etc), and who are perhaps mid-playdate with our own kids. You can spend some time reading through other threads in design dilemmas. There has been one within the last week or so about the opposite problem--guests using backdoor when front door is somehow less obvious--though close by. Since your problem is the opposite, and based on your local culture, you can glean the advice and use it to your advantage. (painting front door to match siding so it disappears; removal front walkway; careful planting of bushes and trees to obscure what you want obscured; remove decoration from undesired door)....See MoreCurb Appeal Help for 1970 half stone colonial!
Comments (29)@jkissiah - Confession - I am using Microsoft Excel and the Windows Snipping tool to do the mockup - Most people have the same tools and can just cut and paste to make this type of "Mock Up". I just play with some of these tools more than some others due to my work. Color changes I did using SW Color Snap Visualizer. I don't know that I like the idea of a pergola, I would want the front look to continue across the front of the home, but I would consider sky lights over each window. I did simply show you what it would look like if it continued. I like it, but I agree with katinparadise - you have a pretty house and you have to know what the improvement would bring to your family and if it is worth the investment. Without doing anything else, I think you could improve the look with a little paint. I feel like the white is very bright in comparison to the stone. I don't think I would go gray - the roof is already gray and looking at the updated picture of the shutters - they are also more gray than blue. I think adding more gray will become a gray blob. However adding a creamy color will help blend the stone and the siding. I would keep the bright white windows and trim....See MoreImproving Curb Appeal - What would you do to improve curb appeal?
Comments (15)Shutters should appear to be operable, so they would need to be as wide as the window... so if closed, they would cover the window. So no shutters on your house. I agree with taking out the boxwood that have been butchered. If you take the bed all the way to the sidewalk, you need a pocket bed on the left side. Yes to learn more about pruning the Crepe Myrtle. Ever heard of Crepe Murder? It's a thing. LOL Honestly you don't even have to prune them. We had several over 30ft tall at our last house, but you don't want one too tall right next to the house. Having lived in the South all my life, I don't have a problem with the grass since we get rain. No idea where you live, but the grass looks healthy. Unless you want to spend every weekend gardening, or hire a gardener, I would not go to the extreme of removing the grass. If there room for a wooden bench on the front porch?...See MoreNeed some curb appeal help for our mountain house!!!
Comments (13)i agree with most comments especially on how to treat the doors. Imagine looking at the picture you showed us & the ski door is same color as house - it’s gone! I like your idea of adding lighting to entry especially around the front door not storage door. If you want to add interest to that side wall with no symmetry maybe think about adding a locally interesting wall ornament that’s weather proof. Iron art? Snowboarder? Per @Olychick comments,be sure to hang it above the snow line!...See Morechloebud
