Solution for tub in 61.5” rough opening?

Our bathroom is 61.5” wide and we wanted a tub / shower combo in this space. Standard 60x30 tubs (like the one in picture) are slightly too short.

What should we do?

Option 1 - swap this tub out for an undermount tub. The Kohler Underscore comes in 60x30 and can be undermount. I just am not sure if there are any installation issues or waterproofing issues I might not be thinking of. rough plumbing is already installed

option 2 - go with alcove tub and find a solution to make it work? we cannot change the size of the bathroom at this point. If we center the tub in the space and fur in the walls around the tub, is it going to look like a “mistake” or is there a way to make it look ok.

Push the tub to the plumbing wall and fur out the left side only. End the tile with a schluter edge and paint the new 1.5” wall same colour as your other walls.

For the 7th time, fir out the studs to narrow the alcove until it fits properly. It’s not hard. Jeesh. Are you working with an 18 year old meth head contractor with the attention span of a spaghetti noodle? This is basic. So basic. Anyone that can’t deal with this needs to be thrown out of that bathroom ASAP.

What thickness is your subfloor? Do you have a flooring elevation in another room that you'd like to match, example, the bathroom floor to the hallway or bedroom floor at the bathroom door threshold? I do recommend waterproofing the floor with a free standing tub. If you did use cement board, you need to bed the cement board to the subfloor with thinset and then fasten it with screws of nails. The purpose of the thinset is not to bond the cement board to the floor. It's to fill the gap between the two so there is no up and down movement that can lead to grout and tile failure down the road. The thinset is not optional, it's required. If your current subfloor is adequate, I'd recommend you go a step beyond cement board and use something like Ditra membrane. Ditra is only 1/8" thick and it has a waffle structure. The structure is designed to isolate the tile bond from any subfloor movement, so you'll get a better performing floor. Ditra comes in 39" wide rolls, it's available at the box stores. If you cover the seam between adjacent sheets of Ditra with Kerdi-Band or even strips of regular Kerdi, you'll have a waterproof floor. If your tile is a small mosaic, Ditra has restrictions regarding tile less than two inches, so you could use another membrane like Nobel. If your current subfloor is inadequate, I'd recommend adding 3/8" or 1/2" ply underlayment over the subfloor, then Ditra. Half-inch ply will provide added strength to the floor to reduce deflection. Half-inch cement board offers no additional strength whatsoever, cement board is simply a transitional material to get from wood to tile. The Ditra (or another thin membrane) is thin enough at 1/8" to not add excess height to the floor, but it's also an excellent intermediary between plywood and tile. And it'll give you better performance than cement board and a waterproof floor as well. Yes, I'd tile the entire floor and place the tub on the tile.

I understand about sticking with budgets. What kind of exhaust fan do you have? If you put one over the shower area and add an automatic humidity timer, that may help with ventilation problems. I'd go for the post at the corner to add stability to the whole thing, especially if the exhaust fan option is to go directly through the wall instead of up through the ceiling and out to the wall. With a washer and dryer in the room, ventilation is important.

From a thermodynamic standpoint, a solid material tub will transfer heat out of the tub water a bit more quickly that an acrylic tub, which has an air space between the inner and outer walls, or may possibly even be filled with injected foam insulation. Something that is solid does not equate with better energy efficiency...think of the solid tub as a single pane window and an acrylic tub as a double pane window. This may not be a huge issue, but if you choose a solid material tub you should do so on the basis of other qualities than that it will be more energy efficient than a standard acrylic tub.

You need to get it done as part of the original build- wall mount tub fillers have a valve inside the wall (like a shower valve essentially) and of course a drain in the floor- wall mount is easier with a slab. No supply chain issue if you order and get delivered to the site. Who is designing/ planning the project?

I understand what you are saying but if only one side is “furred” in, won’t it look like a mistake? Or should tub be centered so both sides can be furred in equally? And then how do you connect the tiled area to the drywall area since there will be a small lip there since the alcove is smaller than the bathroom. Do you drywall that tiny lip, tile around it, cover it with some sort of extra wide schluter trim? The contractor can fur in the walls but it seems he doesn’t know how to tile or “finish” it so that it looks nice. The concern is that it will look bad/awkward.

Fire that current contractor. Hire a better contractor. This just isn’t that hard. You are dealing with an idiot.

And hire a designer before before you hire a new contractor. You badly need design help and visualization.

I am 14 months into a renovation and have been living in a 500 sq for space with 3 kids for a year with no bathroom or kitchen. I obviously have a horrible contractor. That is why I am posting here - I just need some help. If this is so easy, why not just tell me what my options are? How do I “finish” the gap between the tiled part of wall and the drywall? Should I center the tub so GAO is equal on both sides?

These are are all aesthetic questions. I am sure we could find a solution that looks really bad pretty easily. But we are trying to make this bathroom look nice.

LA - the first pic you posted is kind of interesting. Maybe we could just tile around this lip/corner. If I do this, should I center the tub and have an equal “lip” on both sides? I think the “lip” would be maybe .75” or less on either side.

If I push the tub flush to the plumbing side, then I’d have a 1.5” “lip” on one side and none on the other.

It will not look like a mistake if the wall on the left is furred out a bit. Wise council for remodeling is that no one ever knows what your options were. Just make a decision and go for it, and no one will ever notice unless you point it out.

I hope you can get it finished soon — remodeling with kids is challenging!

If you shift the tub towards the plumbing wall and fur out the opposite, you’ll have a nice extra bit of depth for a niche to hold all of your products. Just, not with that contractor doing it, please. You don’t need to add to your issues by having a non waterproofed shower with poor tile. I’m afraid that would be the result with your current contractor.
