a blue screen message!!!
Comments (36)my guess and I do mean guess is that it was a conincidence that it failed right after doing the updates, for DA it was not a drive failure but a corrupted/failed Operating system. It could be due to the fact the drive they provided you was not a new drive, but drives that are brand new sometimes fail. There is an old trick for trying to save info from a failed drive you might want to try it, you freeze the drive literally put it in the freezer, wrap it in paper towels put it in a sealed ziplock baggie, let it freeze well(a few hours or over night), stick it in the enclosure, or plug into the pc, and as fast as possible try to access it and grab your info, it will not work for long but many times it will work long enough to get the info off of it. Usually the window is about 15 mins. You can make it last longer if you put a frozen container or those blue ice packs on top of the drive when you take it out and connect it to the pc (protect it from moisture of course). Have a flash drive or some backup drive ready to go to get that info backed up immediately. You can repeat this a few times if you are lucky. Why freezing a hard drive might help on this site scroll way way down below all the blue text to read the info on how to and why freezing might work. does the drive spin at all? can you hear it spin up? is there any clicking or noise, does your pc recognize or see the drive? If it is spinning then freezing it is not the way to go because a spinning drive is not a dead drive. IF you want to try Spin Rite by Steve Gibson here is the site for it. SpinRite also this link talks of options to try including the freezer technique. Here is a link that might be useful: freezer technique and more...See Moreplastic push-in wire connectors, OK or not?
Comments (37)Just a couple more thoughts here, as I've been involved in this thread before. I wired up four Halo recessed lights (first time -- yay me!) back in April 2010 and they all had the push-in connectors. Now, some of them did seem to pop out if I wasn't careful during the installation. But once I gave it a good push, I then pulled on all of them and they were pretty secure. And with the way the wires are folded into the box, I really don't see anything coming loose. I've had no problems since I installed them. Finally, since it's on lights, I have a vague feeling that if something did go wrong, I'd notice it, since the loop is only energized when the switch is on. If the switch is off (e.g., when I'm asleep), ain't nothing happening anyway :) Secondly, I have this more important point. I stayed at a huge, major waterpark resort over Christmas. The place was built in 2006. One of the light switch plates came loose when I turned it on, and the plate came off along with the screws. Being the curious electrical geek I am, I grabbed my keychain flashlight and checked out the wiring. I saw no fewer than two of the push-in connectors in the box. I can only assume that the entire complex is wired this way. Since the place hasn't yet burned to the ground, I'm guessing these things are safe. Whatever that's worth :)...See MoreAlitalia airlines - good or not? (somewhat O/T)
Comments (51)I consider this forum to be a community - at least that was how it started out. It is certainly not meant to be as narrowly defined as TripAdvisor, which is larger and varied enough to have many specific subforums. Gardenweb also has a travel forum, but it has very few posts, and so it is rather pointless to expect to get much information there. We used to have a dedicated "conversations" section in this forum, but it did not survive the transition from Gardenweb to Houzz, even though many people still wanted it. Since we no longer have that section and many of us still feel like a community, we occasionally have O/T threads - none of which are meant to offend. As for Alitatlia, I will say that I had a very good experience with that airline, but that was two years ago, and I would think that you would prefer to read more recent reviews, since the airline has experienced labor problems lately. I hope it survives, one way or another, as I intend to go back to Italy in the fairly near future, and it had the only non-stop flights from LAX to Rome. I posted the question on this forum because I am familiar with many people who regularly post here, I value their opinions, and I know that many have been to Italy in the past. If I post on TripAdvisor, I have to rely on the kindness of strangers, but I have gotten good advice there as well, especially for Fiji, and I learned about the Fiji forums on TripAdvisor on this forum. By the way, I did a Google search for Alitalia and did not find this thread or forum at all, and so I'm not sure how you found this!...See MoreDaughter's Cooking While Backpacking Abroad - A Continuing Thread
Comments (82)Here is the latest installment of Daughter-san's travel-food blog. I must remonstrate with her to address the dwindling food content. https://katemakesthings.wordpress.com She cooked mussels in Marseille for the first time, and later asked me what interesting things can you do with this shellfish. I didn't know, since my main goal with mussels is to inhale them in great quantity and not let anyone else get any. Any suggestions, you might post on her blog, as we'll be in Marseille for Christmas and could try them. Okay, I'm starting to cook. SWMBO has made two pies and cleaned the house. I have to make a red wine-shallot-balsamic-mushroom reduction, roast a leg of lamb, make a honey glaze and do the ham, then make brussel sprouts with candied walnuts, those are my only jobs for the day. Hopefully I do them well, because SWMBO has been very upset with me. I have been buried in a neighborhood activism project. We are trying to get my neighborhood, Laurelhurst in Portland, listed as a Historic District. I have been writing a website, preparing flyers, setting up an online petition, building a database of houses and neighbors, linking that to an online map to track supporters and opponents, organizing teams of volunteers to canvass door-to-door around their homes, preparing lists of houses to contact and to avoid, beginning fundraising, and generally working a 30 hour/week unpaid job on top of my day job. Which is why I'm not posting so much here, and if you listen to SWMBO - and I would encourage that you don't - completely failing to pull my weight around the house. I've decided that there's been enough sitting around and bemoaning things without doing anything to change them. At all levels, from national to local. I've been encouraging all my friends to pick a cause and get to work....See MoreDawnInCal
