need advice on sprucing up the facade on my mothers house
Comments (16)apologize for the late response as i didnt realize this formum doesnt send out notifications for new replies,,,that or i just dont have the right settings for my account. i appreciate all the responses and like the corbell or trellis idea to add some dimension to a rather flat facade. also a round accent, which can be used as a roof vent would be a nice touch. to answer some of the questions: 1. yes the right side of the garage was raised to accommodate a van. i recently spoke to a garage installer and the plan was to raise the left to match the right. i do like the idea of widening the trim but this will require some modifications to the vinyl to bring in the lip. i have planned on going with a 2 panel door with square window accents on the top in white. i played around with door colors like going brown but it brought way too much attn to the garage doors. 2. i decided to hold off on the garage doors for a few months since the priority shifted towards fixing our leaking roof, which will be started in a couple weeks. the color of choice i have debating on for weeks to the point where i now drive around town looking at roofs and gutter colors/styles. we narrowed the choices down to going with a slate or charcoal since the ultimate goal is to do less w/ the red/tannish accents. i decided on a GAF timerbline charcoal color with matching 5-6" gutters or even a white gutter. still TBD on those choices. 3. windows: the brown is actually the metal frame for the window. the red is a metal trim that was part of the vinyl siding install. im considering painting the red to white...adding some interior white shutters. i just hope the brown doesnt clash too much w/ the white. wondering if painting the brown is a bad idea im terrible at photoshop(actually ms paint) but at least this gives a decent idea of how it might look. appreciate all the input... stage 1: replace roof shingles, add the circular vent trim accent stage 2: garage doors stage 3: shutters, lights, window trim, maybe the trellis or corbell stage 4(my dream) paver stones in the driveway and add brick/stone facade accents, redo the brick steps on the left and right side. this style home is typical to a certain area in the SF bay area. houses are packed together on small lots with very little to no side yard. rather ugly to say the least so im trying to do the best w/ the limitations we have....See Morenew home need advice to spruce up front yard
Comments (11)I think the evergreen shrub on the right corner looks fine. (The others not so much.) You need a tallish shrub at that corner anyway. I definitely agree with a solid color on the front door. And the over and under trim on the double window on the right looks a little odd. I'm guessing you might be able to remove the top trim piece cause there might be brick under it, but I'm not so sure about the blue trim under the double window. Maybe you could paint it to blend with the brick? Or plant something tall enough to hide it but not hide the windows. I like the deep blue on somebody's sample picture above. Could you paint everything that's currently baby blue?...See MoreSpruce/warm up exterior of house
Comments (5)Next time you paint, consider a different scheme. Where the house and trim are both white, there is not enough contrast to add much visual interest ... at least not near as much as there could be. I think it would be much nicer if the house were grey, like the shutters or garage door, and the trim was white. If the house was grey, they shutter could become dark accents. The landscape is the standard builder's landscape that is somewhat high maintenance, with a lot of trimming. If not well maintained, they are able to engulf the house front. If we grew it out, it could look something like this: To be able to make good suggestions, we need better pictures, from a different vantage point. With camera in hand, stand ON the curb. If in the viewfinder you can't see from some of the yard all the way to the roof, turn the camera sideways and use the vertical format. Be lined up with the center of the house. Take a series of slightly overlapping pictures that pan from far left to far right ... far enough that we see the neighboring houses in the background, as your landscape should be responding to the neighbors' landscapes. Then go across the street and capture another scene. This one will include both front corners of the yard. If you need to pan the camera and take overlapping pictures in order to get the corners in, that's fine....See MoreSplit Level Exterior Help! Need Advice!
Comments (19)Just remove the shutters and see how that looks. I don't think painting windows with black is going to enhance the house--just adds another element and you do have a brown roof, not black. A much warmer white for the middle would work better with yellow stone and brown roof. Save $$$ for a beautiful landscape design to further beautify the house. But what you have is pretty nice right now. It's important in a newly purchased house to go a year before making landscaping changes so you can see how the plantings look in all seasons. It's great you have quite a few evergreens for year round color--and no leaves to rake!...See Morehoussaon
