Comments (63)This is kind of off topic of the thread, but sunleafmoon if you had species of plants native to your area planted, then you got natives, grafted or not. The differences you are noticing between the planted natives and the naturally occurring natives in your area are most likely due to their provenance or as you suspect with the Dogwoods, possibly specific cultivars being planted. You can get native species planted on your property, but they could be grown from seed collected in a far off part of that species native range and thus you might notice differences between them and the ones naturally occurring in your area. Cultivars can also originate from seed grown plants from far off areas(to your area) of the species native range or represent extreme forms/mutations of the species. So, it sounds like you wanted local provenance native trees planted, but you probably got non-local provenance native trees planted. It's uncommon(at least here in Eastern Kansas) for locally native tree species found in nurseries to be grown from local provenance trees. Most are shipped in from a wholesale nursery out of state and the wholesaler grows them from seed collected in their local area or they grow them from seed from wholesale seed companies who collect them from who knows where. Smaller local nurseries(I've found most all of these are started by former farmers or people who grew up on a local farm) and local nurseries who specialize in natives seem to grow much more of their trees from local provenance seed sources....See Morebest nursery for landscape plants in SoCal?
Comments (12)I had the two experiences with Plantsexpress. I have one more small experience, which is using their contact form recently to ask if they could get me a 36" box Swan Hill. I received no response, which isn't encouraging. I didn't ever get around to calling them. I'm assuming most people's experience with Plantsexpress is through the special order function at Home Depot. In general, I prefer to look at the specific material I'm buying and take it with me so I do understand your point. Two local nurseries have 36" box Wilsonii sitting there. My interest in a third olive is directly upwind of my pool so I wouldn't take the Wilsonii for free. My house had a large fruiting olive just like most of the houses on my street. Mine had to be removed due to the neglect it received before I bought the house. Most people have them sprayed so they don't fruit. Even in decline, mine made a big mess from the fruit. I bought the Wilsonii in 2003. I bought the Swan Hill from Plantsexpress in early 2013 so not quite 2 years ago. The Wilsonii flowers and produces pollen every two years or maybe three. Hard to tell as it took 4-5 years or so before it flowered the first time. When it flowers, it has pollen and develops fruit. If it has less pollen than the regular olives, I didn't notice. Hard to compare a a tree planted as a 24" box 10 years ago to the others that were planted as large trees 40 years ago. From your area, I wouldn't go to Fallbrook or Vista. I do because my parents and some friends live in that area. From your area, I would go to Camarillo area. If you are travelling long distance to a nursery, it is a great deal of work to buy large plants and not have them beat up by wind in a pickup or trailer....See MoreC-Star Nursery in So. Cal.
Comments (12)Here's a couple of entries from the Facebook list for Cstars, they have been compiled from different sources so some comments are repeated: Gold Mine Recommended. Largest individual flowers. Large multicolor golden yellow flower with orange center. Petals have radiating orange pink lines, round petals, pointed tip. When hot the flowers open up and look more of a solid red, then fade to a yellow rainbow but grainy looking. Marmalade looks like 'Angelica'. looks like a mix between J-105 and Penang Peach. Leaves are very different and round.. has a Thai look. Possible PP seedling. dark star running down the center of the bloom. Incredibly nice large salmon/orange/pink round flower. Overlapping petals. Absolutely beautiful and smells like peach. Salmon orange & dark pink, overlapping & the texture is thick & waxy. Also appears to be a compact grower. It almost looks like Penang Peach or a relative as it shares the same leaves with the hook. Color is really nice & its scent is cocoa butter coconuts peachy cream. Petals are waxy and thick. Scent has notes of singapore along with fruit & vanilla...See MoreBri Bosh
