Does it really matter if the 50's BR's didn't have shaker? If you like it, and you're going to the trouble of replacing doors, I would do whichever style you like best. Otherwise, why not just paint your 'real 50's' doors? You're not putting in 50's light switches, and I assume you're not putting in a 50's fan. Doesn't look like a 50's toilet... I actually like the look of the shaker style drawer front in your pic, even though I have shaker doors in my kitchen and went with slab on my smaller top drawers. Problem with the shaker drawer front, is I am not sure if you can put a handle in the middle part, is there enough wood? So, if you wanted to position your new knobs/handles in the middle that might be a deal breaker. I am not sure if this option would work for you, but in our Master BR we did not have enough space to put in a 4 gang box. I positioned 2 2 gangs one above the other. You could do 3 and 2, or 2 and 2 using one double. I put my two programmable switches (and I strongly recommend using a timer switch for your fan) together, and the light switches together. In your case, I would put the three light switches on one gang, and the fan and the outlet on the other.

If you're in the South Bay, you can try the Home Depot Expo on Almaden. I've seen floor samples there for sale that are relatively inexpensive. I've heard that Minton's Lumber in Mountain View carries inexpensive vanities. If you're looking for a small piece of granite for a vanity top, you can try some of the fabricators and ask about remnants. They'll generally give you the granite for free, all you pay for is fabrication. There are dozens of small fabricators around 101 and 280. All Natural Stone off 101 across from SJC has an area of granite remnants that they sell very cheaply, although they don't fabricate. With kitchen counters that thick, I believe they face the counter with a layer of ply to support the stone. I wouldn't think that the sink would have problems with the thickness, the weight of the stone and the sink might make the slab crack if not supported across the vanity span. We were on a budget for a major dated fixer upper. This is a pricey neighborhood (granite is the norm) and so we opted to make everything as nice as we could and move in ready since we knew the new owners would end up ripping everything out to majorly upgrade. Our bathrooms had the original 50s vanity and 80s shell-shaped sink. I found two $50 modern vanities (including tops, sinks and faucets!) on craig's list and replaced them with those. They were oak, so I painted them white. They look 150% better than what I had, even with the laminate countertops and uneventful faucet. I replaced one faucet because it was in sorry shape. My kitchen cabinets are dated flat maple/oak color, yet custom and in great shape. I was gonna paint them, but didn't have time. So I spuced them up with "restore a finish", added elegant black iron handles, replaced the butcher block laminate with faux granite laminate and painted the walls a trendy green. Added a cheap bistro table from walmart, coffee prints from ikea, and I have the cutest little "bistro" kitchen ever. Our house is still not high end, but it shows very well and priced well for the condition. Overall, I think it depends on your target price range, your budget, and what kind of buyer you think will end up in your house to justify the costs.
