Mud in Your Eye

And flowering is often the only way to know that they're there, unless one's eye is trained to see its diminutive cluster of heads/tubercles. Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus, in the mud flats that are its main habitat, Tula, Tamaulipas State, Mexico, Thanks to Peter Breslin for the photo. If you don't recall, these plants spend a number of months in wet years covered in a thin layer of water and mud. Named in honour of Prince Leon Victorovitch Kotschoubey, a patron / sponsor / lover of cacti.
