Comments (20)The light up book cases are my favorite. I very much like the exterior, which to me is similar to a look called "Yankee modern", done by a firm I wanted to use when we were going to be doing a Beachhouse tear down. It's farmhouse but simplified. Particularly nice in this setting. The interior is a bit more Spartan then I might like but also very nice. Two washers and two dryers is something I always recommend. We have had two sets ever since we had children. In our last house they were all in the basement. In this house one set upstairs and once downstairs. In the scheme of things it's not a huge indulgence but it makes a very big difference in any young family. It strikes me as furnished just right actually. As for real life, not everybody stages before they photograph , for goodness sakes .... Heck if we make that a requirement we may never see some reveals!...See MoreHow to i transform this entry into more of a modern farmhouse style?
Comments (28)I'm actually a fan of benches by the front door. But I live in The Great White North and feel like it's polite to provide a spot for guests to sit and remove snow- or mud-covered boots. I probably would NOT put a bunch of cubbies or otherwise provide a "drop zone" for the kids to dump everything at the front door. That is ideally kept to the "back hall" or "mud room" if you have one. Because if you give them a horizontal surface, they will use it and you'll spend the next umpteen years yelling at them to get their backpacks/etc out of the entryway. As to the other, I've been in lots of farm houses. (Farm country, and all) None of them look like that. Especially with that cast iron railing. All of it is much nearer "Rustic Italian" or something similar. Don't feel like you have to limit that to "Tuscan Gold" paint, espresso cabinets, and travertine floors. Most of that trend was WAY overdone. So - no grapes, no roosters, etc. Go look for images and you see lots of what you have here - white walls, exposed beams and brick, etc. There is a lot to work with there - but it probably can't be shoe-horned into "HGTV Modern Farmhouse." And you really don't want to do that. It's a trend that will be passing off pretty soon, I suspect. Remain faithful to the style and bones of the house and you'll always have a timeless classic....See MoreSmall (96” or under) Quality L-Shape Sectional, Farmhouse Style
Comments (3)I can’t tell you the brand but our 15 year old sectional with microfiber (suede-like) has held up very well with 4 cats of various ages and health (I spot clean it with rubbing alcohol and have gotten all sorts of messes off). DO NOT GET LEATHER with cats. Our leather chair has slowly been destroyed and not intentionally scratched. (One feral’ish rescue will not let us touch hers so trimming is just not a realistic expectation). I know they aren’t popular on here but a sectional works great for our lifestyle too....See MoreDoes this rail style lean “modern farmhouse”?
Comments (20)@G E interesting dilemma. I wonder if you could keep the original frame, remove the waves and add vertical rectangular "boxes" like this. The top and bottom of the "box" would be above and below the top and bottom rails, adding height. Have you spoken to any metal smiths? You said you're working with a rail professional but do they do custom metal work? Retrofitting the existing might be more expensive than making a new one but you never know. If you go the metal smith route, speak to several. Prices vary widely I've found. If your current craftsperson doesn't do metal, maybe they'd partner with someone who does. No matter what you do, I'd keep the original rail and use parts of it as a wall sculpture. Maybe not exactly what I've shown but you get the idea. Lots of wall space to play with....See MoreRelated Professionals
