Can a tub liner be installed without a bathtub underneath it?

We recently discovered that our bathtub installed a few years ago is a tub liner and not a solid bathtub. Our old cast iron bathtub had been removed during the installation process. We aren't sure what is supporting our tub liner, and are concerned that it may fail.

You have an actual acrylic tub. Not a liner.

Thanks for your response Cook's! We had another company come in and inform us that they thought we just had a tub liner. Are you saying that it's impossible to just have a tub liner with no bathtub underneath it? We recently removed some of the silicone caulking and found wide gaps between the tub and the surround. Here's a picture of where the tub meets the surround (and how the company left our floor).

I much prefer to stone the deck, then drop the tub in so the tubs' rim covers the stone. If you butt the stone up to the side of the tub's rim, then you need to work harder for a cleaner line on the edge of the stone. Account for the thickness of the stone when you pour your mortar bed to set the tub in. If you're going that route. If uncertain, you can dry set the tub on top of the stone, peak underneath, see how much space you have between the tub's base and the subfloor. Then pull the tub, mix and set your mortar bed, then reset the tub and get the rim down nicely on the stone. Then drink beer while the mortar bed cures. Several beers. Mongo

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Tub/shower bench with an alcove tub installation

OK, now I'll be an image pasting fool :) I wanted the bench at the end of the tub/shower for shaving legs, or maybe I just want to sit around with conditioner in my hair. If you had just a tub liner, it would be obvious. A tub liner is really flimsy without the support of a tub underneath. It’s like a heavy plastic bag and would move every time someone touched it. The wide gaps are because they didn’t shim out the wall properly.
