Fall planting Watermelon & Cantaloupe?
Comments (14)Hello all! My first post here. Glad to have found this thread as I have also planted some watermelons this fall (along with some pumpkin and volunteer 'compost' cantelopes!) My question/concern is: I planted my seeds on July 24, and have had good success with flowering, bees, and fruiting. However, in the last week or so, I have not noticed any further growth. I have one melon that is as round as a tennis ball and 8' long. This is about the size I got them last time I tried watermelons before they started to shrivel up. I laid out black weed cover as a 'mulch' before planting, which seemed to help a lot as the seeds came up really fast. Both the watermelons and pumpkins leaves are yellowing (a lot more on the watermelons). I think I water them pretty good, and I read to let the top 1' - 2' dry before watering again. I am wondering if I should take the 'mulch' cover off to allow the soil to dry more. I am attempting to fertilize with by a specific schedule according to some info I found online (but some say more potassium when fruiting starts, other say more phosphorous). Anyway, sorry for the long post. I am at my wits end as I can't find any specific info online, and don't really know anyone here in NEFL who grows them successfully. Thanks in advance! Comments (12)Burpee's Ambrosia has been our favorite for years, friends and family rave about it and always want more. They are very productive and when fully ripe I can't see how any other melon can beat it for sweetness and juiciness. I planted 8 this year and have already picked about 25 melons with at least another 20 coming up. A trick I use to prolong their ripening and lasting on the vive without rotting is to place a little "mattress" of pine needles under each melon keeping it off the ground. Pick when they slip, store at room temp for 24 hours, then place in the fridge for a delightful super sweet treat....See MoreHow long do cantaloupe plants keep producing?
Comments (3)Here in my garden (Va) I plant them outdoors around mid-May and they'll last until late Aug or early Sept (like now) before the vines get old and weeds and disease takes over. The last of the melons (Ambrosia) are ripening up now and are a bit smaller and most likely not as sweet as the earlier ones. Pests and diseases in one's own area usually determines the life time of the production line....See MoreCantaloupe plants are drying up, but still baby cantaloupes on vine
Comments (5)Leaf blight? https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=356774 If your vines are drying up, your immature canteloupes are goners. If that's the case, that it's leaf blight, common fungicides are usually effective. So you might plan on using some next year in that bed. But I think they work best if used prophylactically. That is, don't wait until the symptoms show up....See MorePKponder TX Z7B
