Awkward Living Room Space - Set up Help
Comments (12)Paint fireplace white or the same color as the walls, remove bookcase that is on the right side of the fireplace. Get a corner TV console for the left side of the fireplace....maybe tv will partially cover the window, but that is okay. Get some pretty artwork for over the fireplace and take the colors from that for pillows for your couch and a rug if you want. An ottoman or upholstered bench in front of your couch to be used for extra seating when you have company.......should be on rollers, easy to maneuver. Where the shelf unit is now, get a tall green plant..nothing else. If room, I think your chair and a small table will be good by the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs you could put a decorative shelf or console with drawers under the window...facing up the stairs. with a small viney plant on it. Oh, yes, I would pull your couch back as far as you can...without interfering with the door. To bad the door does not open the other way. Have fun rearranging. I do approve of your curtains...white sheers but they should be twice as full as they are now and the door curtain should match....See MoreHelp setting up Living Room (more multi-purpose)

Take a bed sheet and "fold/tape" it to replicate the amount of floor space the table and chairs require. You can move it to all three positions once the traffic path is defined. That should help you find the best spot for the table and chairs. Once that is determined, we can add other furnishings to the alternative locations....See MoreWhy doesn’t my living room look “right”?
Comments (27)Hi Holly. Is the door in between the sofas the main door in and out of the room? Your biggest factor here is layout and paint. Sorry you just painted but its the wrong color to work with your existing pieces. Also dividing the paint color below the moulding strip is making the room feel squat because of the sharp color contrast. One color to the ceiling would be ideal.. Really white or a pale pale pink is your friend here and would have been preferable. The place to have brought in some color accents would be in a rug to ground the space and some pillows. The minty green isnt the right tone. I would pull the rose tone from your fireplace tile and a deeper green. accent with warm whites. A sheer warm white drapery panel won't make the window seem so heavy and you could even mount these to the outside of the window bump out. A round coffee table would be a better fit for the furniture layout. I would do chests on either side of your fireplace and I like where you were going with the round mirror but I would do one over each chest and then bring in a piece of art for over the fireplace. Try moving your art you have on either side of the fireplace above your sofa and see how that feels. They may be too small but its worth a try. Is there a reason for the moulding behind the sofa? Your black floor lamp is overwhelming the room and I would do something that ties into the gold mirrors. If that door us used then that would not be my choice for a place to have a lamp. Thats hard to say without seeing where your travel paths are in the room. A side table and lamp to anchor the corner near the windows. Here are some ideas to tie into what I am saying....See MoreDining Room Design Using Heirloom Dining Set
Comments (16)I love that furniture and wouldn’t paint it ... it has beautiful lines, nice details, lovely color, and more depth as is than paint would. I think it works better for a transitional dining room ... it brings the traditional to the mix. I’m a fan of painted furniture, but more for pieces that don’t have original, redeeming qualities (although there are some beautiful examples posted here for sure). There’s nothing wrong with embracing sentimental value, unless it’s something truly hideous. :) I would wallpaper the big wall the bar is on. Of course there are a million photos in searches ... here’s some: https://www.houzz.com/photos/wallpaper-dining-room-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_722~a_3406-20866 You really could go in any direction: bold, colorful patterns, grasscloth in natural or colors, a muted color/pattern. I like your idea of sconces with the bar. You said you have gray in your house, too, which made me think of these rooms using vintage furniture in an updated style: Not vintage furniture here, just showing the wall color and other elements: I hope you’ll keep us updated!...See MoreHU-890949852
