Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Help improve our house’s curb appeal

Advice needed on painting the exterior of our house. I’m not a fan of the brown paint color and the extra pieces of what the trim. What color scheme for the wall, trim, and windows would go with red brick? Should we remove the ivy from the front porch?

What an interesting house. First of all, yes, remove the ivy. Make sure you get rid of every last bit of it. It is so invasive and it can damage the brick joints. Plus rodents and bugs love the coverage it gives.

I agree with you the brown is overwhelming and the white is too stark.

Here are some great pictures I found on Google images... Lots of stuff to go with red brick....I like the dimensional pieces on the house but I feel like they are to thin for the size of the space they are in. If you look at the picture above from houssaon you can see the lines drawn in are larger than in your photo and it looks nice..

And yes - while the ivy is beautiful it is very destructive....

First, do no harm. Don’t add any unnecessary gee gaws. Simple is better. Clean up the landscaping after construction has taken place. Second would be a bath in a porch doesn’t sound like the best idea. Old enclosed porches aren’t built up to residential standards. The foundation may not be sufficient, and the insulation levels are likely to be virtually nonexistent. Frozen pipes is s big headache to deal with.

Flo, I like your sketch very much (although without knowing the basic sun/wind info I mentioned above, it may or may not be what she needs.) However, the suggestion of polished black Japanese river stones for a first time home owner in Oklahoma is probably not helpful.b You will drain her budget and she will find herself looking at dusty, not shiny, stones. If she likes your concept of creating a dry bed/ river effect (as I do), you or someone else might teach her how to do this with grasses native to her area. Ones that can be easily propagated by division, require no water or weeding, and will blow in her prairie breezes while attracting birds and wildlife. Can, I urge you to google images of landscapes by Oehme, Van Sweden. They are known for using sweeps of native plants, especially grasses. My suggestion to you is to play around with flexible hoses or ropes in dividing your wide open space to see what shapes please you. Then imagine the spaces filled with different color blocks of various heights. Which ones do you want moving, which ones static? Designing a three dimension landscape from scratch like yours can be overwhelming. Break it down into digestible parts. 1) Gather all information about your conditions. 2) Get out the hoses and ropes and draw on the ground like a canvas.

thanks! kendallinsd I think those window changes to the bedrooms would make a big difference to the curb appeal. by the way, I am not against painting brick. if done right, it will be fine. however, yours is a nice muted reddish tone. I think what's not working is that there's too much contrast between the brick and siding, breaking up the shapes. the mockups houssaon and I did for you look better because it gives your house a more cohesive look. I also encourage keeping (or restoring) that pergola. again, it's part of the midcentury shape of that house that makes it special. but like I suggested before, a wood pillar might look better there. have fun. post pics as you improve this adorable home!

Shutters should appear to be operable, so they would need to be as wide as the window... so if closed, they would cover the window. So no shutters on your house. I agree with taking out the boxwood that have been butchered. If you take the bed all the way to the sidewalk, you need a pocket bed on the left side. Yes to learn more about pruning the Crepe Myrtle. Ever heard of Crepe Murder? It's a thing. LOL Honestly you don't even have to prune them. We had several over 30ft tall at our last house, but you don't want one too tall right next to the house. Having lived in the South all my life, I don't have a problem with the grass since we get rain. No idea where you live, but the grass looks healthy. Unless you want to spend every weekend gardening, or hire a gardener, I would not go to the extreme of removing the grass. If there room for a wooden bench on the front porch?

You have a lot going on with all the different roof lines and windows and columns. I think what's throwing me off is the two-tone white and brown. I think if all the white and brown was just one colour it might simplify your house visually and bring out the beautiful architecture. At first I thought to paint it all white but then I thought maybe a darker tone of your roof colour. Not sure. As for the ivy, yes, remove it. It covers your red brick and makes the bottom part of your house look squat. Remove it and the bottom red brick will visually be in more proportion. You have a lovely house, the roof line is really cool! Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the feedback! The house will look a lot more balanced without the ivy- great suggestion. I had also never thought of not painting all of the trim a contrasting color, but Brown Dog, I think you’re right, it will make it look less busy and better highlight the roof line.

The blue-grey color in the first 2 pics Debbie posted would look amazing on your house!

And absolutely remove the ivy.

I would not do both in the same color. If you use the same color go two shades darker on one. I really like the DE dark green. A dark brown gray would look good for the trim, including the trim around the windows.
