Mantel options mid century to modern 1980s house
Comments (8)It did have a mantel and surround similar to that one but with a lot more decoration in it. We were contemplating maybe a hanging mantel so we can see the brick I wish they did not have the cinderblock on each side or we would just go with cleaning up the drywall and leaving the brick without a mantel....See MoreHelp with EXTERIOR design of Mid-Century Modern home
Comments (147)@Indecisiveness there will be windows lower in the bedrooms on each wing . We have one side that will open to a courtyard. so this won’t be in any comparison to a basement- that’s for sure. im Sure that was a fun experience! Basement living And a father who did it all himself. That was my life too (minus the basement). My dad would buy and sale quite a lot and we lived in many unfinished homes . He loves those fixer uppers and living in them until they sold. 😂 @Mark Bischak i do understand the garage statement . But having it away from the home gave us more space inside and more light. Would be open to any suggestions for sure. @ourfarmhouse- yes this home has very tall ceilings . Always wanted a two story feel in a one story home. The living room will have metal beams and lined with a light colored wood. The fire place will have a whole wall of rough white brick . @ourfarmhouse at the front of your renderimags- to the left of the orange door. What would this be? Kind of curious. I have already printed them out and wasn’t sure. as for the garage. It just wouldn’t fit pulled into the house now that we’ve added a mud room . so you like that flat roof wirh breeze way. Or do you see a different design maybe with some pitch to it? thanks again for your time (and everyone else’s)...See MoreHelp modernizing a mid century house?
Comments (6)You are asking a lot for one post. It's good to see both the exterior and interior, but you might want to take the exterior separate from the ideas for the interior or this will be overwhelming. Your ranch has some specific traditional details with the brick work and double hung windows. Is the paint on your brick stable or peeling off? There are newer products now that can eliminate peeling, but I'm not sure they can be applied over any unstable substrate. I would limewash the house (see example below where some bricks show through the finish) paint the trim and add shutters to the long narrow windows. I am pushing your home to a more 'charming' exterior appearance. You'll need a complete rethinking of the landscaping to complement the softer appearance of the home....See MoreMake home LESS mid-century modern?
Comments (20)It's true, I struggled with what to call this house at first. Since it was built in the middle of the century and has a few of those elements it seemed like it fit most in mcm....but without the modern part haha! Just literally mid-century. I think you're all right that it's just a ranch house. The builder lived in it for a year or two after he finished it, so I don't think it was designed by an architect. I think he just built what he liked. I guess when we moved in I felt like we could do whatever we wanted to on the inside and it would work, but everyone who comes over tends to throw "mid-century modern" terms around like baseballs so it made me second guess everything! I think the dated...well, everything...makes it hard to envision as anything but 60s/70s vibes. So once we start doing our work it will start to take on a new life....See Moremainenell
