What is the best kind of wood for flooring?
Comments (27)Auggierose, it is beautiful. I am happy about how my floors turned out but if i got to start from scratch i would choose the floors I showed you. Did you look at the owners comments? They told the exact type of wood (white oak) the color stain, and the finish. I will be so jealous if you get them! And happy for you--eventually. I am kidding! You could choose the same wood, stain, and finish with the wide planks. It really is a matter of what you like best. Don't choose based on trends. My husband and I choose dark stained trim and base boards because that is what we like. The other day an interior decorator was here and she said the new trend in our area is dark trim. Ugh! I guess it reaffirms our choices but I really wanted to be different. My point is that trends come and go. Choose what catches your eye. When you are looking at online pictures and keep coming back to something that is a sign. Both floors are beautiful. There isn't a wrong choice....See MoreApproximate cost of hardwood floor?
Comments (22)Site finished hardwood by a private contractor that only does hardwood floors (not a flooring store) I found to be less expensive than prefinished, but many people do not want to consider site finished. It IS what I am doing, but is more difficult if you are living in the house at the time and are doing, like I am, almost the entire main floor. Random width flooring around here can be purchased at the mill, and is laid end to end with butt ends, not interlocking ends. I forgot what that is called. Looks nice in an older home especically, as do wider boards, but you do tend to have more shrinkage and opening of joints between boards with wider widths. That also looks more authentic in an older home, but may not be what everyone likes. Sue...See MoreKitchen solid wood floor: 50 year pre-finished or site finished?
Comments (14)I currently have a prefinished wood floor in my kitchen, and am switching to site finished in my remodel, in order to match the wood in the rest of the house. After I decided to do that, my contractor pointed out that I would no longer have to worry about crumbs, dirt, etc getting stuck between the planks. I was really happy to know that, it was something that I hadn't thought of. The downside of site finished, as I discovered when I had the hardwood floors refinished in the rest of my house is the fumes. We had to move out of the house for several days when they were doing the work. Hopefully it won't be necessary this time because it's only the kitchen. As far as the sustainability of kitchen wood floors, I've had mine for over 15 yrs and it looks really great. I love it because it is less hard on the legs/back when standing cooking/baking for long periods. Also dropping something on it does not have to lead to the item breaking, another benefit....See Morefake marble, fake wood: what do they mean for resale?
Comments (18)Funny how threads remind us of differences. I just assumed by marble you were talking about countertops. Marble floor? What? In 2018? Not in my area. We had marble in our last master bath (countertop) and we won't even do that again. But resale? Resale is so variable and in my world, marble floors = discount price for removing. Marble was done in the 90's. Now - at the very high end I can see it ... nah, I can't ... not anymore. The comment above about younger folks appreciating authenticity. Yeah - but not marble floors. Real wood perhaps but they also favor practicality. The thought of mixing real wood and real marble seems really unusual for me. That would be a climate thing. But perhaps you should mention where you are and at what price point if you are asking about resale. Here in NC - we use wood for floors. Laminate at the low end, real wood at the mid and high end. And nothing else for some of us - we are doing wood everywhere except a bonus room (and that is kind of a budget decision). Tile labor has gotten expensive locally so the best wood is still cheaper. So doing wood even in my kid's bathroom. Now wood can be solid or engineered and they are both real woods. Then it can be vinyl, laminate or tile for wood look. Wood look tile is very popular right now. Lots of people call it a trend but I personally like it and it is very practical when wood is unacceptable for scratching....See MoreRelated Professionals
