Granite Countertop With Gap between the wall
Comments (12)" ... My point is they aren't returning phone calls and they have the money. There is zero that can be done if they don't care enough to do the job correctly in the first place and won't answer the phone now. The time to do due diligence was well before now." While I do agree that the job should have been done correctly the first time, there is a possibility that the OP can still get resolution and maybe it's not time to throw in the towel just yet. A recent poster just went through some quality issues with a low-cost pre-fab company and they refunded her money, so resolution is not impossible. The OP posted on Saturday, so maybe the shop is closed for the weekend. And as adreak100 suggested, the OP's CC company or bank may be able to assist. " ... Lowest price fabricator that you could find? Or double the price of that guy? If the first, you got what you paid for. The second, you wouldn't have even had to make the call because the problem wouldn't exist." Maybe the OP was working in a very strict budget. It doesn't mean they shouldn't get a decent job where the gap can at least be covered by the backsplash of their choice. It's not really fair to say that everyone who doesn't pay the highest price deserves to get ripped off. Just MHO. " ... They don't get to blame the wall; it's as irrelevant as what they had for breakfast." LOL....See MoreBrand new kitchen, big gap between range and countertop
Comments (3)"What is considered the 'normal' width for the gap?" I'm assuming you're speaking of a freestanding range? If so, a gap between 30 1/16" - 30 1/4" would be considered normal. The countertop sides should be perpendicular to the rear wall and parallel to each other, no matter what the cabinets are doing....See MoreSanity check on what I think is a lousy counter install
Comments (18)Thanks Joe Olddryer - it's not the cabinets with the sink. I watched the guy doing it but didn't look close enough. He eyeballed the line where he installed the left side of the sink (made a mark with a tape and then hand drew the line) - and when he screwed in the support it shifted upwards a bit. I though he corrected it at the time - but I guess not. for the record I saw many of these issues (not the sink) before the installers even left. I had an email into the owner that he needed to come out and see this mess even before they were done. From his initial response I thought he was going to make it right - but I guess as he realized how much that was actually going to cost him he changed his mind. At this point My wife and I are considering this an expensive $1,700 lesson (that's about what we paid for the initial deposit) - plus the $400 sink - and are going to contract with someone else and do a complete replacement with both a higher quality stone and fabricator/installer. we knew at the time that we were going down a "budget" route and weren't expecting perfect (we repainted the cabinets instead of replacing them after all). But there is "budget" and there is "wrong". This is just wrong. To Sophie's point about a Malibu vs an SL500 (we actually have an SLC and a Buick, so I understand the difference) - I still expect the Malibu to pass state safety inspection and have a standard automotive paint job without dings and scratches when I drive it off the lot and be able to hit 100mph - even if it can't do 160MPH or have nice leather seats....See MoreHUGE Gap Between Cabinets & Countertops
Comments (18)You make a good point Hillside House and I have thought about that, I feel its a little of both. I don't have a lot of confidence in the countertop installers as they initially installed countertops that were too short and didn't go all the way to the wall. They tried to hide it but putting up a side splash (which I specifically indicated I did not want multiple times before they installed it). When I addressed the side splash needing to be removed they tried to convince me it would look better with it, then offered to remove it once I'm ready to do my backsplash. I stood my ground and said it needed to be removed before closing and thats when they admitted the countertops were too short. So, I don't have much confidence in them, but do feel whoever installed the cabinets should have taken the time to ensure they were level. Needless to say I am definitely fighting this and won't close until it is fixed properly....See MoreRawketgrl
