The flowers look fuzzy to me, like pipe cleaners. I think we have to see a close up of the flower structure.

Thanks for the replies so far! Yes Carol, the flowers are fuzzy, and very much like pipe cleaners in clusters. I’ll try again tomorrow to get the original pic to load via my phone as it’s much clearer. It’s not a Paulownia though. No idea how big it is as its not my pic, trying to ID it for someone else but it looks more of a large shrub size up to first floor level maybe? I’ll try another zoomed in photo of my phone screen for the time being, the leaf shape is pretty clear...

The closest I can make of it is perhaps a variant of Tetradenia riparia.

This pic may show the shape similarity of the flower inflorescences to your photo and their attachment to the stem(s) a little clearer.

The flower color is not a match - however, leaf shape and margins (not seen in this image) are similar to your ID plant as is the overall plant habit (Tetradenia).

A brand new species for me. Never seen anything like it myself on the Algarve. Going by Google images the OP photo looks enhanced in colour. What do you think?

Thanks to all who responded. It does look like quite similar in form to a Tetradenia riparia. I’ll see if my friend can get close ups but I don’t currently know if it was near her home or on her travels around the general area of the Algarve. Thanks anyway, much aporeciated.

I am not familiar with the Algarve area however, I have seen a few specimens of T. riparia within the Sydney ( Aus.) metropolitan area.

Color is somewhat variable in the flowers with a broad variation going from whites, pinks and thru to almost purple. The leaves and other main identifying characterists typically show less variation.

Hard to say about color enhancements floral, I guess some jpeg files show the usual automated processing performed by the camera which sometimes cause images to appear over-saturated.

If we can see a better photo it might help to reach a positive ID.
