Chamblee's tea purchases
Comments (20)Duchesse: Thanks for asking the question about pruning teas. It's actually the next question that I was going to ask, and I have saved the responses for future reference. BTW, Chamblee's is wonderful. I emailed them about replacing the "Lovers' Delite" with "Mlle. de Sombreuil" and they answered back immediately with no problem. Thanks for whoever recommended this nursery to me! I already have a "Sombreuil" growing in a pot, and it will be interesting to compare it next to the real thing. I'm also glad to find out that Mlle de Sombreuil has very good disease resistance. BTW, if Mlle de Sombreuil is actually a tea, and not a noisette, what does that make the impostor Sombreuil? My rose book lists it as a tea. Also, if Mlle de Sombreuil is not "La Biche", what was the original La Biche? Jeff...See MoreToday's haul from Chamblee's
Comments (17)Sammy, I'll keep an eye out on Basye's Blueberry, since yours have gotten rather large :') This is the second time I've grown Basye's Blueberry, and although I like it a lot, it's not as blackspot-resistant as my Carefree Beauty was or as resistant as my chinas & teas. It's very worthy of growing in my garden though due to its excellent fragrance & zero thorns. By the way, the only reason I removed Carefree Beauty years ago was because it got way to large for the space where I planted it. Great rose though. Regarding Reine des Violettes, in my opinion, it is of a different character than the other hybrid perpetuals I have grown. It does not have the really large "heavy blooms" that many of the other hybrid perpetuals do. For example, it's nothing at all like 'Paul Neyron'. Reine des Violettes' blooms are medium-sized and although they have lots of petals, the bloom depth is shallow like a gallica rose, with a perfect button-eye like some of the old European roses have. And unlike most hybrid perpetuals, Reine des Violettes does not make a good cutting rose at all, because the petals fall cleanly to the ground after about two days max on the bush. The major attraction of this rose to me are the gallica-like form, the button-eye, the consistant fragrance, the arching canes that make it usable as a "short" climber, it is full yet NEVER balls on me, & mine has never had a single thorn on it. Although it blooms more than many hybrid perpetuals, it in no way compares to the frequency of a china, tea, or shrub rose. I get a heavy flush or two in the spring, sporadic blooms all throughout summer, and very, very few blooms in the fall. I completely love it, but I also recognize it's not for everyone. Just want you to know what you'd be getting if you got one. Randy...See MoreRoses from Chamblees!
Comments (19)Michaela, I am almost embarrassed to tell you how many I got. Please don't report me to the rose police, or my husband, for that matter. These were kind of hard to hide due to how large they were. I was expecting bands and got three and one gallon pots, oops! i got Belinda's dream, carding mill, evelyn (for the smell), plum perfect, wild blue yonder, enchanted autumn, blue for you, delightful Phyllis, gruss an Aachen, 2 cream verandas, sunny sky, savannah, dark desire, alnwick rose, first crush, and sombreuill. I debated and debated about Jude the obscure, but read mixed reviews, so I chose Evelyn cause I wanted a really fragrant one. You will have to let me know about him cause I may want him for next year. Haha! I live in hot and humid Louisiana. All of my current roses are trying to bloom but the rain is making them ball instead! Next week the rain is predicted to stop so I will post pics with drier weather. I'm hoping all the roses can take the rain. So excited to see blooms on the new ones! I know I'm supposed to pinch off, but want to see if they are who they say they are! Ha! This is such a new and exciting hobby for me! I am thrilled!...See MoreChamblee's Roses Madame Anisette flowering yet?
Comments (32)Thanks, Chris for your kind words. I am a Chris as well. Anyway, Lemon Fizz was one of the roses several years ago our Extension site was trialing for Earth Kind designation for Texas A & M. I remember many of the Master Gardeners liking that rose. The Extension’s Demo rose garden has Poseidon & it is a big rose situated on one of the corner inner berms. Everyone loves its color & fragrance. I didn’t want a big rose in my own garden, so I went with Plum Perfect, another fragrant lavender Kordes rose. I do agree with Chris about the canes of MA being not as pliable to go around an obelisk. I have an open 3 sided obelisk and I put a clematis called ‘Betty Corning’ in the center of it. It has pale blue/white bell shaped flowers, is disease resistant & in my garden it dies to the ground & re-emerges every spring to grace the 3 poles on the interior. At the Extension’s garden it is paired with a climber called Jasmina, another Kordes rose. There it reaches the top of that arbor every year. We lightly prune it in that particular garden area & it doesn’t die to the ground like at my home. In case anyone is wondering, both gardens mentioned are mulched with wood chips/cedar mulch is for my rose garden....See Morerbains5
