How many coats of paint/primer should I use?

I will be repainting our master bath from a medium faux beige/Tuscan look to a light beige. I would like it to be eggshell sheen.

I would like to do no more than two coats if possible. I could do two coats paint or one coat primer (tinted close to the color I want?) and a coat of paint. Or should I do a coat of primer and two coats of paint? It's a large 1980's bathroom (remodeled in 2005) so that is why I'm trying to get out of doing the third coat.

Here are the two colors. The white strip to the right on the paint chip will give you a better idea to the tones I am working with. The photo looks like it is a textured wall but it is smooth.

I would do one coat of primer and 2 coats of paint over those walls. Two coats of paint always looks much better.

If your topcoat is a dark beige/light brown, then 2 coats of that should cover most anything quite easily. Skip the extra primer coat.

One coat, according to label directions is sufficient. You should apply primer just like paint. Even coverage provides the best finished results. If there are roller ridges or thin areas, those may telegraph through the finish coats in two ways. Roller ridges will be reflected by the sheen. Thin areas will absorb more sheen from the paint possibly causing a dull look in that area. Michael

If you used Gardz, then any wall issues have been taken care of - one of the reasons to use a primer. So the next questions should be does the new color hide well in 2 standard coats. If yes, then you don't need a tinted undercoat. If no, then you do. If the substrate is in good condition, the purpose of a tinted primer is an undercoat of color to support the hide of the new color. It's not necessarily to cover up the old color.

Thank you both. I did insist, so there will be two coats. But - another question has arisen. The can of BM Advance paint says to wait 16 hours after the first coat to sand and add a second coat. What would happen if we waited only two hours, when it feels dry? Would that really cause problems?
