Any tips for growing puya?
Comments (6)I don't know about growing them from seed, I would think any seed-growing info you can find in posts about any spiny terrestrials on the forum would work. Anything like Dykia, Hetchia, Deuterocohnia, etc. I have my Puyas growing in the ground and in pots...the ones in pots range from slightly more sandy potting mix to just whatever I use on any other plant. Sorry not to be any more helpful or specific for you. Are you planning on growing them outside, potted, in a greenhouse for the winter?...See MoreCatopsis berteroniana - soil mix
Comments (11)Thanks for the replies. Minxie, you said to go light on the orchid bark mix--why is that? Also, I have a phobia about using just peat and bark as this mix seems like it could become too dense over time. How does a 1:1:1 perlite:peat:bark mix sound? If you don't mind, I have a few other questions for you nice folks: 1. Watering: Should the mix be constantly moist, or should it dry slightly between waterings? 2. Dormancy: Minxie, you mentioned an active growing period. My understanding is that these plants are tropical and as such, don't have a dormancy? Is this correct? 3. Fertilizer: I plan on fertilizing once every four waterings with a 1/2 strength water-soluable orchid fertilizer. Does this sound good? 4. Miscellaneous: Any other cultivation advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you both again for your replies....See MorePuya raimondii
Comments (15)I've always had some doubt about paying $70 for a four head Cryptanthus warasii, when its usually hard to find just one plant, and it can go for $30 to $50. Now I feel a LOT better, considering someone paid $82 for only 7 seeds,on a hard to germinate plant. There were 9 bidders,5 bid $50 or more,2 bid the last minute, and I think the price could have gone higher, but they just ran out of time. Hmmm, anyone going to Strybing soon? I need a favor ! ;) Bob...See MoreAnyone tried Puya alpestris (Sapphire Tower) in TN?
Comments (4)I would give this plant a try as well Regina, but thats just me. I look at zone and minimum temp requirements on plants and see a challenge. I will try almost anything that is at least marginally hardy(zone 8 to me). What fun is gardening if you cant try new and exotic things? We have several things in our gardens that have minimum temp requirements of 20 or so, and they seem to still find a way to come back every year.
