Sir Thomas Lipton
Comments (7)Here is a little story about Sir Thomas. I got him in a one gallon pot, where he languished for several years - I was in nursing school at the time and never found a spare minute to plant him. He looked half dead most of the time, but I kept him watered and he never died. After I graduated, I had time to garden so planted him behind a Russell's Cottage Rose. He is now taller than I am and quite a bit wider and blooms lots. I have him in a spot that gets all day sun until about 2pm, then my horse barn shades him. He is on an incline, so the soil drains well. I was watering him the other evening and did notice I needed to deadhead - but several others are like this also. Perfectly healthy leaves, dark green. Makes a lovely shrub. While watering him, I was thinking what a miracle he survived, and remembered what a pitiful little thing he was in his pot, and how he just took off, grew and thrived the minute I planted him. I think you will be very pleased with this rose. Just remember not to spray fungicide on him - rugosas don't like it. Judith...See More2004 Classic Shrub Rose List
Comments (2)I notice that 'Turkes Rugosa Samling' is shown on the list. Would anyone know where to find a plant? It disappeared from Canada some years ago. Thank you...See MoreWhat roses did you plant this winter??
Comments (33)Great to hear from you again Vivienne. Glad to see you are finding more places for roses :-) Also pleased to hear that you are recovering Sandie. I have bought far too many roses this year (at least DH keeps telling me) and I still have 3 Jubilee Celebrations in a pot because I haven't decided on where to put them. Yolande D'Aragon - is doing well, has had two small flowers, no way was I going to pull them off. But due to this head cold I can't smell a thing. William Shakespeare 2000 x 6 Grace x 6 Queen Mother x 3 Jubilee Celbration x 6 Heidesommer x 3 Crown Princess Margaretha Parole - thanks to Fran and her enthusiasm. It has had two flowers and they are stunning. SDLM - this is my third. I love this rose. Renae x 2 Mrs Herbert Stevens x 2 - the first two didn't break dormancy so I bought a replacement pair from Perrott's in Brisbane. I couldn't wait another year. I think that is about it. WS2000 looks like it might live up to its reputation but I don't know if I will be vigilant enough with the spraying. So I'll see how it goes. So far Parole is a stand out. Glad to hear you're all enjoying your new purchases. Anne, I think I might have to go with the name tags soon. It's taking me longer and longer to remember the name of each rose as I go around the garden. Next year I'm going to expand the beds and get more Teas....See MoreRoses 2015
Comments (43)Thanks Brandon! I do find nursery roses usually much stronger and better established than my cheapo Walmart roses. I was fortunate to find Winnipeg Parks at Walmart for $12.97, however it was apparent they were dug out from the ground, roots hacked (some worse than others), and planted in pots this year, I'll probably give them some extra protection over the winter. Calgaryplants.com has WP for $24.95, but there's a $9.95 shipping cost for the Calgary area (I was thinking of trying them out as they also have some things on sale right now). A few garden centers will have things on sale later on, but limited selection. Last year, I got 3 roses on sale for $20 each at Golden Acre at the end of the season. Blue Grass has roses for $28.99. If you're a member of the Calgary Horticultural Society, you can get 10% off regular priced plants at many nurseries. Ostrich, that Canadian Tire sounds great, I'll have to check it out one day. I find CT roses are pretty good, I noticed mostly sourced from Bylands, which is the same as many nurseries. I've always known Morden Blush to be a pale rose. Yes I do find heat fades blooms. Plus most photos online (mine included) are of blooms in their prime, which for me is only 10-20% of it's bloom life. You might like Morden Belle or Morden Centennial more. Even John Davis. I do like how Morden Belle looks good in all stages. Depends on what you are looking for. There are a few Morden Centennials around here that look lovely. My understanding (from hydrangeas) is acidic soil creates blue tones in blooms, and alkaline soil creates red tones: http://apps.caes.uga.edu/gafaces/?public=viewStory&pk_id=4542...See Moredara_gardener-Vancouver Island, Z8
