If you cannot see the repair, then it is acceptable. But if the sink cut out is wrong, I don't get the problem, they will have to cut a new piece anyway.

I would be requesting a new one. You're paying for a higher price for a quality product. Why settle? With the sink cut out, it's now a double mistake.

If you're willing to settle, I would be requesting a substantial discount.

1st of all how big of a corner piece broke off? Picture would help.

Quartz can be probably repaired if the right epoxy is used and depending on the size, but I'm not sure how it will look or hold up... installers and stone handlers usually handle this materials with care because the replacement is costly.

Chips and minor blemishes are filled with epoxy this is a common practice for minor touch-ups or repairs, but broken corner, especially being this an island and around the corners you usually get most of the traffic, so I would take that into consideration.

If you accept the repair without written warranty for the repair, etc and something happens down the road you will own a damaged top.

That said, if they messed up the sink, now they broke the corner do they still expect you to pay the full amount I would ask for a significant amount of credit if you going to accept the repair or have them give you a warranty for the repair with clause like if the corner breaks again they will replace the entire top which they probably will not agree too but doesn't hurt to try. Most reputable companies would replace the top if they broke it.

I am a fabricator. The broken corner, possibly, could be repaired such that you'll never know it was done from an inspection. Repairs are done with epoxy so if the repair is acceptable cosmetically TO YOU there should be no concern about it's long term integrity. Re: fixing the sink; if the correct sink cutout is larger than the one already cut it is possible to cut the correct one by reprocessing the material. Not easy, as the already cut piece has to be precisely located on the CNC but it can be done and is as good as if it was done correctly the 1st time. In my shop we usually "sweeten the deal" for a customer when we have a mistake. Often it is a custom lazy susan or other small part for the customer. Some people expect unreasonable discounts (20% or more) for errors which are fully rectified. Don't be that person.

Thank you for all your comments and help. I have not heard anything back from the contractor. I have really tried being very reasonable with everyone. I don't think I should have to take a repaired counter. We don't have a picture of it but the piece that broke off from what my husband showed me is probably around 7" long and goes from thicker to thin for the thickness. The first problem we had with this counter we noticed right after they installed it the overhang to sit at it to eat was only 6". The fabricator and contractor must have gone by the cabinet island blueprint. When the cabinets were installed the cabinet installer increased the depth 6" but no-one knew this. He had to do it for certain reasons. The contractor asked me how big of an overhang I wanted. I said I don't know I want to be able to sit there to eat. I sent him a copy of the island blueprints.

Now I know it should be 15" for counter height. The contractor figured 12" but did not take into account the extra 6" added to the island. So we ended up with a 6" overhang. I never understood if the fabricator went to the house and actually measured the island how I ended up with only a 6" overhang. So to not be unreasonable or that person I allowed the contractor to cut into the extra room on the island. He said he could cut the island back and we would get the 12" overhang. I have nice cabinets they were not inexpensive. The cabinet installer warned me not to do it that it will not work. I agreed with the contractor and he cut into the empty space in the island. He was able to get only a 10" overhang. The pendant lights have to be moved and the ceiling patched where they had been. The pendants were installed to go over the island if they had added a 12" overhang to the island before it was altered. The end panels I wanted simple and just flat they have to have trim on them to cover the whole the contractors person made or I have to order new end panels which will take awhile. The contractor had someone put one piece of trim to cover the hole they made. It does not look right. I wanted only a 1/2" overhang on the ends but they cut the island top to 1 1/2". The contractor said he can have them cut it to the 1/2" like I had asked for in writing. The trim to match the front of the island is thick so the trim on the end panels will be the same and would not look right with the 1/2" overhang. The trim would stick out.

Then there was also a problem with the sink cutout. They were removing it and taking it away to fix it when they dropped it on the tile porch and broke off a piece. Because of all the problems I have had with this island top I feel the will not be able to repair it correctly. Thank you for all of your advice. I will be so glad when it is all done.

It sound like the entire job took a left turn someplace. It seems like no one is on the same page throughout this whole counter-top process and everything got messed up.

First of all I never heard anyone to go ahead and cut any counter-top being this stone or even Formica without going to the job-site and checking everything out, especially to confirming dimensions in the field that is a must. Any job involving stone should be template d and if any changes were made after template was made the stone fabricator should have been notified and made another trip to make sure the template is adjusted.

That said I hope you get this straightened out, if this was my kitchen I would get them to replace the top, because a 7" piece broken off the corner not gonna cut it... they can put that top in their own house.

This is why you never remove tops to alter sink cut outs. You do it on site, dust free. Pull the cabinet front. Geesh.
