selling our home..need advice on curb appeal
Comments (35)You guys are awesome! I finally got back here today to see if anyone responded and I couldn't believe the number of people who were willing to help. I love the ideas. I'll have to talk to my dh about the shrubs. I like the idea of hiring a professional to trim. The t.v. antennae was actually removed a couple of weeks ago, so I'll have to give my dh a high five for that one! The front door is painted red, but could use a new coat. The house is brick, so we will not paint it, but we have always thought that a lighter trim color might help. The windows are vinyl, so there's nothing we can do there. The entire side of the house (both sides) has a dark wood vertical siding - not sure what that's called). We should probably paint that a lighter tan? The flowers around the lightpost were the ones that were there when we bought the house. Last summer, I changed those to pansies, I believe. There is a nice selling point to this house - our back yard was beautifully landscaped by the former owners. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to landscaping or taking care of plants, but I am going to try really hard this spring to get the back yard ready. It has a water feature that I'm also clueless about. I may need to get some help with that. I'll attach a picture of our back yard, so you can see our true selling point. The pictures taken in August were taken on move-in day, thus the van in the back yard. Any pictures taken last summer would not be suitable for viewing since I was due for baby #4 in September - not a lot was done to the back yard! Some occasional weeding - that was about it. The rest of my energy was used up on the vegetable garden. Phew! Thank you again! Comments (21)I, ever going another way, would plant things with lots of leaf variety - I'd choose two or three kinds of of coleus, mix in both chartreuse and burgundy sweet potato vine, and then masses of white and blue-violet flowers. Bright flowers are tempting, but you want the focus to be on your house. I'd plant no fewer than five plants of the same kind in one section to give the border a sense of abundance (except for the sweet potato vines - two or three in one spot is plenty). White petunias and white geraniums are very satisfying and easy to grow, and you can edge everything with rich blue lobelia, which you can get inexpensively in flats. and plant all over the place. All those plants will start to grow fast once they're established in a couple of weeks. You can boost them by digging in a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote. Here's a shot of lobelia in my herb pot garden by the parking space in our city alley, and one of how they look around a white geranium - I bought one flat and planted them everywhere just three weeks ago to tie things together. In another few weeks, they'll spill over the edges like mad. I agree that yellow will make your tan house look less elegant. People are funny about color. I dislike pink flowers, which makes gardening here in Virginia a challenge - and I spent the first three years in our previous house pulling out pink azaleas and replacing them with white, brilliant carmine, and palest orchid. That's why I like leaf colors and white when staging a yard - and the variety and the white look gorgeous in the early morning and spectacular in the evening....See MoreHelp..need curb appeal ideas for house I'm selling!!
Comments (11)Looks nice. I was thinking a darker charcoal, so this is helpful. Can you show me a rendering with darker dimensional so I can compare? Are you a landscape designer? Unfortunately it will be on the market before the spring thaw, so I probably won't be able to get this elaborate with the plantings. Looks lovely though!!...See MoreSuggestions for giving this house some curb appeal
Comments (5)Landscaping would help a lot. You have a nice big area with some shrubs all bunched together on the right side near the garage. Depending on what they are, I'd remove them or at least some of them. I'd plant some additional flowers and or low growing shrubs there instead of the grass. I'd also plant some small flowering tree to mask that expanse of brick on the left. I'm guessing there is a matching window that we don't see. I'd get rid of the shutters on the larger windows. They are too small for the window size. Do you plan on painting the siding? The white really contrasts with the brick in a not good way. I'd paint the siding a different color that is more similar to the brick and the garage door the same color....See MoreDaisy S
