Advice on paint sprayers for first timer

I enjoy painting, and have a lot of experience rolling walls and cutting in....but I've got some cabinets I'd like to freshen up and would like to tackle it with a paint sprayer.

Any DIYers out there have advice on good sprayer models for a first timer working on cabinets?

Don't let it run close to being empty. It will start to spit paint out.

Lynn, They're pretty much the same, but this was the variegated form. I've had peduncles bud up and when they open, they often times either never fully open, or they open one here, one there, or they abort before they open. So I was glad to finally get one that opened all the way, even though a few flowers hadn't opened yet. Both variegated and regular are worth growing, but I do have problems with variegated's new leaves - sometimes they come in with weird shapes, or the leaves drop before they get very big. I recently purchased and installed Thomasville cabinetry about 6 weeks ago, I got the Linden door style in maple pearl. I couldn't find much on GW about Thomasville, but we took advantage of the great savings, and feel that we got a tremendous deal. The cabinets are beautiful, high quality in my estimation (of course, not to be compared to custom...they are what they are). The finish is so far very durable, and I have four children - not gentle at all. Our KD was very responsive, and the only minor 'issue' we had was that the sink base didn't have the soft close mechanisms upon delivery. He had them shipped and we had them within 3 days. We installed ourselves, so I can't speak to their install, but overall we are very happy with both product and service. I know other GWers have had different experiences with big box stores.. The door is beautiful - we were torn between cherry and painted, ultimately went for painted. I'll try to post a picture later, but there's still lots to do before my kitchen makes it to the FKB... :)best of luck

I am actually changing from an exclusive right to sell with an agent to FSBO this week. I have had several friends and colleages tell me that they have only sold FSBO and they recommend it. The last two houses of three houses to sell in my neighborhood were FSBO. Since you don't need to move fast, you might hold off of a flat fee MLS listing and try it without one for a few weeks. Just remember the buying public is being told on the news everyday it's a buyer's market, the real estate bubble has burst, mortgage rates are rising, blah, blah. So your sale may be affected by the general good or bad news depending on what's on the TV. You should check out your market, talk to a few agents to get an idea of what your proeprty is worth and try not to think you have to satisfy all of the buyers all of the time - you will drive yourself crazy and spend too much money "updating" a used home and not getting that "new" home price. Unless if you are in California where I have no understanding of the price of housing. Good Luck!

The problem with spraying is that it takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it. Some people are not coordinated enough to ever get the hang of it. If you put the paint on too heavy and it starts to sag, this could be a difficult thing to fix. If you put the paint on too light, it dries down poorly and the finished look is not good. What you want to do is apply the paint heavily, but not too heavily so that it sags. This is why it is tricky. I like Graco and Titan sprayers. The homeowner models that they sell at Home Depot are probably okay for occasional use.

An HVLP sprayer is a good investment. Fuji makes really nice ones at a variety of price points. Painting latex paint is hard - it's very thick and you won't get great results from the Harbor Freight sprayers (but those are fine for thin stuff like stain on cabinets or finish coats). If you're looking to thin paint for use with a sprayer, Flotrol is awesome stuff. I use it even when I paint trim with a brush because it increases the working time of good quality paints like Benjamin Moore.

HVLP guns will not be cheap. They are worth their cost though. If you plan on using it as a business it will pay for itself. If a one time deal, look at simple air spray guns. DeVilbiss & Binks are quality brands that make both.

Once you have your gun, practice, practice practice!!!! Do not try spraying your cabinets until you are confident with the fluid motion you need to produce a quality finish. Spray finish is not about applying multiple thick coats, it's about applying a few thin coats. It can go sideways quickly if you don't know what you are doing.

I'm a retired Cabinetmaker/Furnituremaker (due to an injury). It took a few years to get to factory finish quality for me.
