Main floor makeover, new to us home
Hello, We bought this house for the view and the amount of light. Windows along the north, east and south exposures. I have never lived in a home with this much sunlight. Plan to keep the kitchen cabinets and flooring, carpeting and red oak doors. Need new living room furniture, dining room furniture. The wall for the TV is at a 45 degree angle. The blind in the large window under the half moon window hides the tennis court next door. The living room area and dining room are open to each other. LR size approx 18 x 16, DR approx 11 x 10. The table in the DR photo is for scale (3 ft x 6 ft) Need ideas for interior paint colors. Plan to keep the oak buffet in dining room, willing to stain or paint it. Plan to keep the light wood dining set in the kitchen eating nook area. My husband would like an espresso colored dining table, but I am concerned since it is so close the to light wood table in the kitchen eating area. We will replace the counter tops, but was advised to wait to be sure the paint on the cabinets holds up well. It is BM feather gray. The range and microwave are stainless and black. The dishwasher and refrigerator are white under magnet covers from the prior owners. We live in a waterfront community in the pacific northwest. I think we would like a coastal casual look. I am really lost as to where to start and would welcome advice.

Comments (12)I agree that it is bad design to install shutoff valves for toilets and wash sinks and not for the showers. Our house was built in 2005 in NJ, is this really the code these days? All the houses I've been in NYC had shower shutoff valves. It's very inconvenient as let's say you need water to the toilet or kitchen and the whole freaking house don't have water while you wait for a part to come in. My kitchen ceiling got soaked because of this. Bad, BAD, design. Comments (3)Thanks for the feedback! We currently have a main floor master just outside our living room and don’t mind the noise because it’s rarely used. This new house has another living room just outside the space that we would be converting over which would also be rarely used. Additionally we have a tv family room adjacent to the kitchen that the kids will be watching tv on while on this floor. (This new house has 3 living rooms on the main floor which is why I️ didn’t mind sacrificing one of them.) Ultimately, we have decided to save the extra demo costs and update the upstairs master at this time because this house is too big to retire in and its a best fit for a family versus a retired couple who would need a main floor master. Comments (7)Holly, I don't know your contract, but if your builder included this in your contract, s/he obviously had strong suspicion that it would be a cost. Without "opening things up", the builder really had no idea what, if any, issues existed. And so s/he obviously planned for the contingency. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoLook at some coastal rooms/decor in the Houzz photos. Here is one I like. Light grey sofa with lt blue for main colors. The hutch can be chalk painted darker grey.
Keep some of the wood tones to warm the space.
If you can find an inspiration picture you will hone in on your style and can add to it as you go along.

5 years agoAlso, if you're keeping the pink counters, I would embrace them and add another pink element. Ex. Chandelier
If you're not crazy about pink and want to add color, you could accent the back wall of the breakfast nook. Ex. (Not crazy about either chandelier but tried to tie in the flooring)
