I googled Spanish houses and found a bunch of images but the numbers keep changing on them so I can't reference them. The ones I like had dark trim around the windows. I know you just want to paint the door for now, but later down the road you might consider painting the fascia white or to match the tiles and then paint the window and the pergola that dark green color. I found a picture of a color that is something like that caramel apple, but maybe a little lighter. I think it would be cool if you planted some espaliered fruit trees or shrubs along that long wall on the left. With some soft up-lighting that would be very dramatic at night.

The room is 12 x 12, so not too big and one window. It tends to be dark. It has wood paneling and crown throughout. The smoke damage has been determined to warrant a refinish/cleaning, not a replace. The floors will be replaced due to smoke between crevices in wood. Ceiling is also being replace. Wood is not beautiful, but overall effect is nice for a small den with one wall built in bookshelves, a set of small double doors (no glass) and a back door out the other side of the room. I am sorry I don't have a better picture, but I am not in the house currently.

My personal experience with white walls would make me shy away from having them in your basement. Back in 1996 I bought a home in Southern California. and painted everything white. I had all white walls, white trim, white doors and very light floors. I had 10' wide windows on every outside wall and tons of natural daylight flooding the house with the bright sunny days. I loved it! I got tired of it after about 10 years and re-painted using taupe and blue green grays and deep reds. That also looked amazing. I sold that home and moved to Central Pennsylvania. I bought a home with a lot of windows, but the days are often cloudy/overcast and they are not all huge windows. This is a fixer and the front of the home has hideous metallic gold fleck wallpaper and the back end of the house was painted white. I have added ceiling lights and lamps, but the white just falls flat. The Taupe I used in SC is too dark here and the colors that I used in SC turn gray and muddy here. I am using the same color white for trim and ceiling, but I am repainting the white walls with a mid toned neutral and the bright white trim to give me the contrast that makes the rooms feel bright and clean. The neutral I have selected is C2 Filament.

Thank you Emily! This layout looks interesting. I love the desk area at that location. I want to add a bookcase or something similar next to the desk. I will measure and move things around to see how I feel about putting the sofa in the middle and tv on the wall across from the stairs. Yes, we are going to replace the floor but we haven’t looked at what options there are. As for the chest freezer, I could actually either remove it or put it in the laundry room. The corner on the lower right corner is where the stairs from the top land - sorry for not making it clear on my initial drawing. The door across from the bathroom is for the storage space under the stairs. We have family usually visit us once a year and the my stay for a few weeks. We used to have sleeper sofas but they weren’t that comfortable so that is why we got these super comfy portable beds with memory foam mattresses that we put out when needed.
