Need help finishing off modernizing/lightening up Family Room
Comments (24)Bestyears, I just had to log in to say first, your room is fabulous. I love the color you painted it and am jealous of your amazing sewing skills. I love the fabrics you have chosen. The second thing I wanted to say is to think long and hard before purchasing the braided jute rug from Ballard. I absolutely love the look. It has to be one of the best looking jute rugs out there, but it is a maintenance nightmare. It takes some getting used to underfoot but will eventually wear to a somewhat soft feel. The maintenance however, is tremendous. I had one for 2.5 years in our primary living area with heavy traffic and it was like have 15 large shedding dogs with a few cats sprinkled in. Fibers everywhere. If your room doesn't get much traffic it might work otherwise I would try to find something else first. I replaced it with a cheap seagrass from Lowes for the time being and it doesn't shed at all. Laurainlincoln might can share more if she has this rug. It might not wear for her like it did for me. Comments (35)Yes, that is exactly where we started with Les' arrangement--except there would not be enough space behind the sectional for the bookcase as it would put the sectional too close to the TV. The room is only 17' long. It did not work for us--as we are a family of five with two teenagers and there was too much contention for seating when watching the TV. Having it this way so we have an extra chair facing the TV works so much better and when we had friends over for Thanksgiving who'd been here before we switched it commented how much more spacious it felt. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the kitchen table really is quite close to the family room so putting any furniture in the middle closes everthing in and makes for awkward walkways. Here's a couple before shots so you can see what I mean: I tried the sectional as Johna had suggested earlier, while it looked better, unfortunately the sectional is not oriented best for that (there are two pieces that butt up to the back wall) and would just come apart (think teens that are not overly gentle on the furniture and like to lounge here)--so reality having it pushed against the wall is the most practial solution. We just had the electrican over two weeks ago to get the cable moved. I tried moving the bookcase down further, but it looked squished since part of it looked like it was hidden by the console/TV and it's so pretty that I want it to be visable from the kitchen area. I could probably center it under the window, though if I remove the floor lamp--which is a possibility since we do have recessed lighting for this room. So, no one is liking the dried flowers from Michael's? I need to go there later today so am wondering if I should return them or not....See MoreNeed final touches for family room re-do...
Comments (29)I am posting a room to see what finished looks like and so you can see if there are any concepts you can transfer to your room....your room looks perfect but maybe you need some surprises..... the room below has an interesting orb type chandelier which is what you want to add, so good there, the rug has texture and contrast, which you want to add, there is some interesting mirror placement that add sparkle; maybe small mirrors on either side of the art work or above the curtain panels.....but add sparkle somewhere in the room for contrast.....thinking antiqued mirror or lamp shade? The mantle is great done in silver and bronze paint, and I like the carved wood for texture and the red flowers to match the curtains and art work for a spot of color....nothing very big, except the unique chandelier, just a nice mix....oh and love the leather ottoman, in a deeper color that reiterates the wall color, a nice room and it might inspire you to add small thoughtful pieces as you go along....oh and love the rug that was suggested; it will be the bomb I hope.....lastly I know you have curtains, but maybe an interesting tape on the leading edge in a patterned design to add some life to the curtains....your room looks safe but added touches will enliven it up and give it some contrast and oomph.....love the TV stand! Genius!...See MoreNeed help with finishing touches on Living Room
Comments (6)Great start Nancy !!!! The rug is NOT to big !! Looks great, def. see some color added tho, what colors do you like is really the question. You can do almost anything. Can you face the couch toward the fp, and flank the 2 chairs with side and perhaps the club chair next to the pf wit a small table? you only know if you try it. One larger brighter piece over the fp will make it appear larger and of course brighter. If you leave the 2 chairs in front of the fp, try a small round table in-between otherwise they look disconnected. Hope this helps a bit, have fun, good luck, best, Debra...See MoreLisa
