What color should I paint the exterior trim and door?
I bought this home last fall, and am looking for suggestions on what color to paint the exterior accents on the front. They’re currently yellow, but the canopy of the bay window is peeling. I figure I need to repaint that, so I may as well paint the cover over the porch and the two accents on either side of the door, and likely the door as well.
The current yellow isn’t bad, but maybe a muted green? Orange? I want something more contemporary that is still complimentary to the character of the house. Also, any suggestions for apps where I can upload a photo and experiment with colors?

5 years agoThe first thought that came to mind when you said "more contemporary" was black or deep green. Here are some inspirational photos. You didn't ask, but I would also remove the old schrubs and put in new landscaping. It would really move the home's look to the next level.
Paint or replaced the front porch handrails your trim color and if you could replace them, select straight line ironwork. Add a new stainless mailbox and house numbers and change out your lighting. All these details will help you achieve the look you are aiming for. However, you can't totally change an "English bungalow" to a modern building without more structural changes, which I wouldn't do at this stage.

Comments (5)Sorry, didn’t finish because I went searching for an inspiration photo. Consider painting/staining the clapboard and the shingles the same color. You will be staining the shingles and painting the clapboard (recommend B.M. Exterior Soft Gloss), so the finishes will show differently, but the color the same. It’s the fish scale shingles I find so fabulous…those I would stain lighter. Trim all white and your door stays the same. I know it is more than you asked, but give it some thought. Comments (6)I would leave everything white and then have a vibrant, attention grabbing front door! Place a colorful chair on your porch, or pots filled with colorful flowers. My point is…small items that, when you get tired of a “color,” you can change out or vary with the season (wherever you are.). And then…landscaping adds color, too. 5 years agoI would paint the door columns the same white as the rest of the door casing. Then I might paint the awning and bay roof charcoal or forest green. In fact, I might also paint the door and storm door that color, too.
Also please, while you have the brushes out, paint those white downspouts to match the brick so they disappear.
