Please allow pairs of inline photo thumbnails to be side-by-side

I inserted this request in another discussion here, and it was suggested there that it might get better visibility in a separate discussion, so here goes. Since inline photos have now been reduced in size a lot, everywhere except in the original message (like this one here), they are now, in effect, large thumbnails that can be clicked on to expand them to their largest size. Those "thumbnails" are small enough to be able to fit horizontally side-by-side as an alternative to their now vertical inline arrangement.

So this message is a request to Houzz programmers to implement in message editing the ability of the message poster to "drag" (or otherwise place) a pair of photo thumbnails into a horizontal arrangement as an available alternative to their default vertical arrangement.

Some existing gardening websites already offer this optional arrangement, and this is a screen capture from one of my messages (on one of those websites) that takes advantage of that option.

This is another example of that option in use in one of my messages there.

I recognize that some considerable programming effort might be required on the part of Houzz to offer that capability as an editing option in these forums, but Houzz has already shown impressive programming capability in some of their recent implementations here, and there are significant space saving advantages to the horizontal arrangement option, as well as an improved appearance in the messages themselves. So I hope that Houzz will give this suggestion favorable consideration. Thank you for your attention.

Hello Houzz and everyone,

Well, it has been over 7 weeks since I posted here, with no response from Houzz, so I guess they aren't interested in making this small improvement to their website. Other users have found bigger problems with this website, and some of those have been resolved. Perhaps Houzz will eventually address this issue, but I'm not holding my breath, and will continue to use the GardenWeb portion of this website.

I have found that the suggestion was correct that Houzz works slightly better in the Chrome browser than in the Firefox browser I had been using. I now use both browsers, but still have a slight preference for Firefox. But if issues arise, I will use Chrome here.

Hello Houzz and everyone,

I may on occasions use Firefox for convenience. I see that Houzz hasn't responded to this message yet, one way or the other. I repeat this request, because it will make the forum look better when multiple photos are inserted. For example, these are a couple of my current home-hybridized zinnias. Click on them to see the larger versions.

Those inline large thumbnails would fit just fine in a side-by-side arrangement, and save space here on this forum page. In the Edit mode I can drag the second photo up beside the first, but the dragged symbol always indicates that it is at a forbidden location, and that attempt to achieve the side-by-side arrangement fails. It would be a good feature if it worked.

I surely strayed OT when gabbing on about a swimming pool, but I was looking at the examples and photos as issues that include both true access (to the front of the home or the main entry or the heart of the home, or all 3) in terms of physical layout, proximity, obstacles, versus how to achieve "welcome to my entry" or welcome to my garage or to my driveway. So one part of the original discussion was that we should strive have both (good access and good identification/welcome), and part of the discussion was about how we do various other things or remedial things to mitigate either poor planning or site limitations. Very often, color is an easy way to link or separate or highlight, or to creat drama, and the properties of color and hue make big differences. So I am interested in how perhaps the exact same design, executed in different colors and materials, might create different effects. That is one of the fun things about seeing some of the photoshopping of paint and siding colors on previous posts relating to balancing garages with the houses, or front doors, or whatever. From a design observation, I think the blue driveway color has an impact of de-emphasizing the front door and kind of "popping" (yes, I used that awful word) right at the street edge and flowing away from the house rather than drawing you in. But, for others, it may create an opposite response and seem to flow toward the house and entry and pull you in from the street.

Thank you for all of that. It's not that I have a problem really with code, or at least that rudimentary subsection of html coding for webpages and blogs. ...i took a basic computer coding class in college and dropped it within the first two weeks for something less mind boggling.... i think it was advanced calc:) Part of it is for loading pages more easily. Part of it is to allow larger more detailed images to be viewed one at a time at the reader's discretion rather than opening six huge images at once. Part of it is not screwing with the right margin of a thread and throwing off everyone else's format (that's pretty annoying). "Yeah, finding a host that hands you the code might be easier but once you learn to do it that way you may behooked. :)" You're correct on that. I have used it, though not nearly enough to make it second nature, to put images side by side in a thread to save linear space and it just looks better in some circumstances. I've used it as well to place an image wrapped in text... that has a very professional look to it. For some dang reason, and maybe it's just the terrifically bad luck of trying to post hyperlinked thumbs in forums that strictly prohibit it. Though that would be hard to understand since all of those forums allow image insertion,. Is it possibly the case that some forums reject any code that is not included in their button menu above the text message box? The "insert" and "image" etc? I do like to learn. But frankly I would be really happy to find a zero nonsense, coding tool for idiots, where anyone could insert text url or image url into prescribed actions (photo wrapped by text, two or more photos on same row, hyperlink photo or thumb or text to another web based url of photo, thumb or text. Old galvanized pipes have a finite lifespan. If you repair this leak, you have a good chance of it developing another leak in another location. The only good solution is a complete pipe replacement. The major expense of a pipe replacement will involve the digging of the trench from the meter to the house. This is an area where a DIYer can save some money. Have the utilities companies come out and mark the location of the pipe and any other utilities going to the home. Then you can choose a route parallel to the current pipe but just far enough away from it that you aren't disturbing it. You can rent a trencher (Maybe $200) and hand dig the larger access points at the meter and house. Then you can call a plumber to lay the pipe and make the connections. If you are not physically capable of doing this, then do you have any family or friends that would be? Church group? Scout troop? There are usually community resources that can help you to figure out what you can do here. The worst thing you can do is to ignore the leak.

Please do not change a thing about the fireplace itself, it is gorgeous, including the stone mantle. Your floors are gorgeous too -- warm, and the warm colors in the FP, oh my goodness what I'd give to have a FP in my kitchen like that. I agree with others that what you've got on it is too small and too much, also too horizontal. You need (a) vertical thrust (b) simplicity (c) largeness. On either (or both) side(s), what do you think about a large vertical oil painting (or canvas transfer of oil painting) -- NO GLASS, just a framed oil, leaned against the wall, flanked by a pair of large topiaries or candles or wood candelabre (something of a soft material, not metallic or glass, since you have a lot of "hard" going on there with all the brick and stone. I know this is simple, but simple is often good, especially when the fireplace makes such a grand statement all on its own -- so much so that you could practically leave it completely undecorated and it would say enough! The only thing that bothers me a teensy bit is the exposed black firebox and I'm wondering about a simple (but beefy) fireplace screen in front of it. But even so, the rest of the composition says so much that this little point doesn't matter much.

Thanks for your response. I do realize that the actual implementation of this simple request might not be at all simple or easy to do. But it would be an improvement, and a feature that other sites, such as The National Gardening Association (Garden.org) already have.
