Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Quarter round or bullnose for shower tile edge?

The 12x24 tile we'll be laying horizontally in our 34x60' shower comes in a 4x12 bullnose tile and a quarter round. The shower is in an alcove so there are two wall edges to tile. Is one better for this layout than the other? Does anyone have pictures of either methods?

I do not want a Schluter edge.

My mom's 12x24 tile just had a 3x24 bullnose option, which is what she used for the two side wall edges of her alcove shower since she wasn't interested in schluter.

Here's what it ended up looking like:

I think that a metal edge can look very nice, particularly in more modern rooms, but our personal preference is bullnose. We were told by our tile supplier that the tile we chose doesn't come in bullnose. I took a sample tile to other suppliers to find a bullnose that would work with it and found my exact tile elsewhere...with the matching bullnose! It turns out that the first tile supplier "doesn't like" bullnose and they'll tell people that it's not available when its just not available through THEM. That may be your situation at all but, just in case, I thought I'd mention it so that you can confirm bullnose availablilty on the manufacturers' websites if that's what you prefer to use. If you do opt for a metal edge, I'd use satin nickel to match your other finishes and make it less obtrusive.

Schluter bullnose works great if there is no bullnose made to match your tile. Much better than showing a raw edge. But if there IS bullnose for your tile, it makes for a much smoother flow, not adding another material into the mix. As for which will last longer, both, if installed properly, will outlast you OR me. As for pros or cons, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, that being the homeowner. :-) In other words, which every YOU like better, in spite of my long winded speech. LOL

bill- I'm aware that it doesn't always work, but thought it was useful to mention it as an option. In our case, the glazing was variegated and light-colored, and the tile body was a somewhat darker tone, but the polished edge went perfectly with the darker grout color we chose.

I like a real trim piece (pencil liner, quarter round, etc) to finish the exposed sides. I try to pick field tiles that offer trim pieces in the same colors, so those options are available if needed.

I think a quarter round is more traditional in feel.

The wide bullnose would be more in line with the style of the large tiles.

I can see the value in both of your points. Vanity is traditional but glass shower doors will by necessity have the roller type header, which may look more contemporary.

One of the problems with the bullnose is the linear pattern runs the length of the 4x12 tile, causing the lines to run vertically on the edging when installed against the horizontal 12x24 tile.

Here's the tile installed in someone else's bath. Is the pattern subtle enough that vertical lines on the edge won't matter? I think it looks even less linear in a wall position judging by the little 6" sample I have.
It's a through-body tile and the tile setter said he could bullnose the edges but I have no idea what that might look like. Anyone have experience with that?
