Paint Home Decorating hallway

paint colours for a hallway with lots of doors (7!)

After (by my standards) splurging for a colour consultant, I received the recommended painting instructions. I shared it with my painting contractor and he had some concerns, and so now I'm going to the genius of the masses.

Main issue is I have a small hallway, with lots of doors (3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 coat closet, 1 utility closet, 1 linen closet). Wondering what would work for painting in here. Additional information is as follows

· majority of the house is Gray Mist OC-30 (yes it's Greige... but I do like it so we'll leave it at that)

· initial recommendation was to paint most ceilings, walls, jams, and doors Gray Mist, and baseboards White Dove

· contractor has convinced me that it's a bit much on the gray, and I should have ceilings, jams, doors, and baseboards White Dove (kinda the default to have all those the same colour)

· I had asked my colour consultant about that, and she said there's too many doors in the hallway to call them all out, and it'd be better to have them fade away

What are your thoughts? Assuming the walls stay Gray Mist and the baseboards Dove White, what would you do with the doors and jams?

Since I imagine the other doors in your house will be white I would paint these white too.

This is actually the only set of doors that I have so I don't have to worry about that part too much, so it's really open ended with what's best here. Do you think it'll look a bit busy with so many white doors in the hallway?

thuesen, I ordered the Sonoma Jade Glass tile from a local dealer. However, I called around to several dealers to see who had the best SF price. Believe it or not, I had gotten a dealer to price match another dealer. I think I was quoted anywhere from $31-$34 as the SF price from several places but had one at $24/SF and had a price match on that. Depending how much tile you are looking at ordering, that may or may not make a difference. Sometimes your tile person (if you have one) can get a discount but there are lots of variables since they have to get the price quoted to them (which may depend on how much business they have with the dealer) and they can choose to pass their discount on or not - plus may want to charge for their time in ordering and picking up tile. One thing to keep in mind is if you can find a place that regularly gets shipments from Sonoma and is one of the biggest dealers of Sonoma tile, then you may be looking at a lower cost for shipping and could possibly get your tile quicker. Most local dealers would have charged all these shipping and handling fees to cover the cost of their shipments from the manufacturer so it could be another $75-$100 for special order. The place I ordered from not only price matched, but more importantly only charged maybe $13 total for some portion of the freight shipping cost since they get weekly shipments.

Take a look at this post. I think yellow and gold look very nice against wood...just not against light maple. Look at the green that the OP had in her last house and how nice that looked against her floor. I'd do a light green that wasn't pastel, more of a sophisticated grey/green or clear green. I agree with Ingrid. Something along these lines would be beautiful on your floor ... I also think a single, long runner would be better than two runners. But, if you truly love your mustard rugs and aren't wanting to consider a change, no worries. I would choose a light beige for your walls. Darker shades will make it feel even more cave-like. I'd keep the doors white, same as the trim. I love adobe houses, and yours looks quite interesting! Is that a kiva fireplace in the living room?

not a pro. so....the oak doors are mostly glass, so it's just the trim that is wood. I can't really tell what color the front door with the stained glass is - navy or black? The other door, even though you're not happy with it, blends in with the rest of the wall, so I'd leave it. I think it would look odd to paint it to match the front door.

I think painting the doors the same as the hall--maybe with higher gloss-- will make it feel less choppy. Stereotypically the color consultant has an eye for design and color, and the contractor has experience with what is most common.

However I don't think the doors look too bad as they are currently! If nothing else, paint the utility closet to match the walls so it can disappear.

Thanks for the feedback... yeah that same colour with different finish was the colour consultant recommendation. Contractor's feedback was two-fold:
1. it's going to cost more for cutting
2. it'll actually look a bit weird with baseboards being white throughout the hallway...
Point 2 was there things started down the rabbit hole. IF I keep white baseboards throughout the whole house, then the hallway will have a bottom white stripe. So then he said usually the door trims are the same colour as the baseboards. And then at that point you're got this white outline of a door, so may as well paint the door as well.

I know I definitely want to paint it... I'm not a big fan of the wood look (it's also a veneer).

As for the doors, I generally have them partially open (though predominantly closed). The office one (directly to the left) is the one that's open most of the time.

Same color as the trim around the door - whatever that is. Will look more cohesive, less choppy. If door is a different color, it accentuates the skinniness of the trim - not a good thing imho.

I like (purely for ease) all of the doors and trim to be the same whatever white I have.

I would not do them the same as the walls.

(See what happens when you ask a lot of people?)

I vote for the trim and doors white too. It just wont look right, to have them all the same color as the walls.

Yeah... I think more and more that seems like the right direction to go in.

And so dear Internet, I thank you for your input.

I'll update photos once the job gets done just to close out on it so everybody can see.

When I moved into my house it had a hallway just like that but the doors were white, along with the baseboards and trim. I hated it because when you came down the hall you felt blinded by all of the white. I painted my doors a silver blue and left the trim white and the walls are a soft beige. I love it now because there's contrast that adds interest but the blue that I chose complements the beige so it doesn't look too busy. That's just my experience but I definitely recommend against painting those doors white because flat doors like that just look cheap when painted white.

I like the idea of all the trim painted the same white. I agree that the flat white doors lack interest, picking a midtone grey that coordinates with your wall and floor color might look stunning on the doors.
