Help with fence gate placement
I'm back with another question...
I've sent in the deposit for our fence and am now second guessing the direction one of the gates will open. We're in a tight spot on that side of the house and I don't know how to achieve what I want with the space and obstacles we have. There is 8'7" from the house to the lot line. There is a downspout coming from the new porch roof that is currently positioned to direct the water to the lot line and away from the deck skirting. There is also a door to access the space under the porch right next to the house and downspout. I originally wanted to plant along the fence line for privacy. If I did that the gate would be in an awkward spot and place you right into the runoff from the downspout. If I plant around the deck I'll have the access door to contend with and most likely won't be able to have any plantings that screen the back third section of porch. I'm thinking my first step with everything would be to bury the downspout and run it along the porch/deck out to the yard?
Where would you place the gate on this side? The fence builder has the hinges on the corner post of the fence with the gate opening out towards you.
The 8.6' circled in blue is the area I'm dealing with. The screened porch is the rectangle next to it and the deck is the section out in front with the angles and steps.

Comments (14)Dotty, I wish I could say I was almost your neighbour, but I live in Langley on the mainland. We phoned around to quite a few companies for the gate installation. Remember that the driveway is 400m long. Every company we phoned said they would come over to see the site and give a quote.The company we picked was the only guy who said he would stop by and actually drove up to the house to talk to us. The other sales reps stopped by, unbeknownst to us, looked at the end of the driveway and phoned later saying that yes, they could put a gate in. They had been told the driveway was long, come up to the house to let us know you've arrived. Some people just play at work I guess. This winter, I went to Lee Valley Tools and got an automatic deer scare that is a sprinkler with a motion sensor run by a 9 volt battery. It hooks to a garden hose. I'm guessing it will work on them a couple times and they will learn that going ''there'' gets them wet and then you move it to a new spot. It works day or night which would mean being aware of it as you stroll down the path nonchalantly only to be blasted with cold water while admiring your own garden... or worse, your guests, though I can think of a few people I would ask to come for a stroll and innocently profess having totally forgotten about that contraption. Comments (23)Although my neighbor's father put a fence right up the middle of our property line, his fence was on their fence, we, however put up a fence when we took down our garage & by law had to have a 6 ft fence surrounding the pool & we did put our own poles & higher gate not having problems. Each state laws differ, it's best to go to your homeowners insure, ask them to inspect property rights & your blueprint on property lines can be found at the local municipal buildings or where you can apply for deeds. You can call 311 whom will direct you to the proper agencies, or go to your council-persons, senators or community associations. If you continue to have problems with the neighbors, that they're not showing common courtesy, informing you of construction being done, you can go to your local mediation center, receive a summons to serve them, go with them(this is definitely on a volunteer basis)generally, Free, saves on legal cost & court time, plus, this will show that you tried to satisfy both party needs & concerns to no avail, should you wind up in court. Comments (16)Make the gate the same style as the fence -- same board widths, posts, wood, etc. Make the gate the same size as the fence panels and flush with the fence. Tell your contractor that you want the gate to blend in with the fence and they'll help you figure out placement, design, etc. Think about how/when you might want to open the gate (yard or street side) and talk to the contractor about hardware options. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoLeave a clear space just inside the fence and use vines on the fence to provide privacy in that area immediately inside the gate. I looked for pictures of out gate that opens our gate that opens outward (the north alley gate) to try to show what we did. The 'man door' at the back of the garage opens into the alley just inside the gate too so the clear space provides access to that door as well as space for moving the lawn mower or snow blower etc. in/out of the garage through that door. Maybe something like that could work for you...?
