vtandrea, congratulations on your Psychopsis. I had one for years and finally sold it because it did so well, I got bored with it. Minimal guilt :) I didn't repot mine for the first 4 years, believing the bit about them hating it. When I finally repotted it, it sent up a 3rd spike. Coincidental, perhaps, but every year after that, I repotted it in about half medium bark mix, half sphag in a plastic pot during April-May here in Minnesota. The Psychopsis thrived. It went in a plastic pot because, during summer, it would have dried out about every other day in a clay pot. However, the plastic pot went in a clay pot so it wouldn't tip over. One thing about orchids from Hawaii - Bush snails almost seem to be part of the air there. My strong suggestion is that you get Sluggo and sprinkle the recommended amount of granules on top of the medium until you repot it. After a few waterings, it'll look kinda gross, but it'll keep those nasties from eating root tips, boring into the roots, and possibly/probably killing the plant. Recently, a commercial grower looked at an orchid I got from a FL vendor, where Bush snails are prominent, too. The local grower pointed out Bush snail damage to the roots and recommended Sluggo - which they don't sell. I found it at Home Depot. It's safe for people and pets. Enjoy! WhiteCat8

Hi guys so my psychopsis are ok so yea me. But now I can't get the orange coloured one to rebloom :( . I keep both of them side by side in a shaded west facing window and from the time of purchase up until now the yellow one has rebloomed twice but the orange one hasn't. They get the same exact treatment with everything and yet it still has not bloomed. Could someone please advise me as to what I am doing wrong. It is just so strange that one is doing so wonderful and the other nothing. I am wondering if one would require more light than the other? Thanks for any sugession offered. VELLETA.

Thank you Bill. Trust me I know psychopsis orchids just don't really grow easily for everyone. When I got this plant, it half died because the center was pure spagnum and the outer edge in charcoal now you can just imagine me watering for charcoal and the center constantly soaked. when I did eventually realize I repotted in a bark mix with a bit of spagnum. It sat there for a little over six months doing nothing. I finally moved it to a south Western position which is where it's at now, and it just took off. Honestly this is just a wonderful feeling that I got it happy enough to grow and throw a spike. VELLETA

Yes is a growth. Spikes are smaller in diameter, mine blackish and grow 2' long. Do not cut them off unless become dead and light brown. I have flowers repeating for years on tbe same spikes. It's the best way to get multiple spikes with one flower each. If growing but not blooming you might need more light. They like lots! 'Hildos' rides again! Tall 5 - 6" flower Butterfly Orchid, long lasting, easy to grow an essentially pest free plant. New Zealand Spaghnum moss medium lightly misted each AM let to dry between waterings. Grown quite bright in 1000+ ft candle of light. I grow under bright lights T55 55Watt each Fluorescent and/or Sodium Vapor 150W each. With the latter in an growing inside a living space, add a dual T55 fixture with 3200K an6400K bulbs, so that the plants look more natural. The light bank pictured is ~660 W total. Sodium Vapor lights are both energy and heat efficient, but hard to live near alone. 400 to 1000W are much too bright to sit next to, except for the cat who loves the focused radiant heat feeling. In the space shown multiple 110W & 150W fuxtures allowed me to better balance light levels and more evenly distribute heat than if using larger fixtures. It also gives some backup WHEN (not if) a bulb or fuxture ballast go out. The 150W sodium vapor fixtures are 1/4 the size of the 2' long 110W two 55W fluorescent folded bulb fixtures, and hense easy to intermix There are handy free SmartPhone light meters that help one position fixtures and plants, such as "Lux Meter". The light bank shown also blooms African Violets at 200 ft candles, 6 to 10' feet away. Like drama? I have cut back to 1' and overwintered Brugmania 'Maya', 'Snowbank' and others inside in large tubs placed in the back left corner . Some bloomed and reached the lights by Spring! Watch out for Spider Mites. Brugmansia blooming inside and Hildos flying in the light canopy zone above, with passionflower vine running through and small fan assistance, is a powerful and incense-ing experience. Hints: keep house at 58 F night temperature so you enjoy the radiant heat effect. The pillow zone is where wife, cat and self most compete to sit. Watered largely by misting in AM with or without light foliar feed. Cement mixing trays with gravel manage the mini-jungle hydrology and natural bat guano replacement aspects ... with no odor or leaf salts build up. Such fun!
