Comments (1)I prefer #2 because the rug doesn't cause a tripping hazard in the traffic path across the room. You could do #4, but you'll want to rotate the rug about every 6 months so the wear pattern from the traffic path balances out. #1 & #3 have a portion of the rug in the traffic path and it could be a tripping hazard....See MoreArea rug placement and crown molding help
Comments (21)If you are going to hang floor to ceiling curtains definitely leave space for them to swing freely behind the sofa and otherwise wait until you have your rug in place. As for rug shopping it depends on so many things, like whether you have kids, pets, what your climate is, your budget, your personal vision of how you will most often use the room — and how easy it is to get samples or return rugs if you want to shop online because of the pandemic (certainly the most important consideration!). If you plan to have workfolk in and paint, a rug can wait but I would pick one before investing in drapes and pillows....See Morearea rug/runner placement ideas?

I have included the bench and console table which is on order. if I place 2 runner they will interfere with one another.
