What have I dug up?
Comments (5)The area is much too large to have been a french drain - plus there is no need, the whole neighborhood slopes very gradually to the south. I was wondering about the leach bed myself - but if I were installing a septic system, I wouldn't put it so far away from the house. (Does make me wonder where it is though) The area, as far as I can tell from sample holes, runs along one side of the backyard for about 60 feet then turns left at a 45 degree angle and runs for about 20 feet into the middle of the back yard. The strip seems to be about 8 feet wide. There is a big tree growing on top of this strip so it must have been covered for a long time. I'm guessing at least 40 years. Anyway, the soil looks alive in there - lots of worms and bugs - so I guess I will dig and plant it. I picked up some boxes from the extention office and will send off for a soil test today. Thanks for your input....See MoreDug them up today, but was it too early?
Comments (2)They will be fine, no need to rebury. I've grown dahlias for about 20 years (not a lot of varieties, only a handful) and mine have always been a tan color, I think I'd be worried if they were brown. tj...See MoreDug up bulbs in the garden today...
Comments (3)I wouldn't give them a hair-cut, what ever green surfaces are there to build the bulb up for next years' blooms. Theoretically, one is supposed to remember where they are and dig them up after the foliage dies down - then replant them in the fall. Thats certainly the easiest way to do it, the bulbs are all nicely formed. However, I've dug them up in May and pulled them apart and planted them everywhere, big mess, and they made it just fine - lost a year flowering, but two years later, they were back in stride....See MoreI dug up my Agave - whew!
Comments (7)Neil - it was a busy day. It took me all day because I kept having to go inside to cool off! But then again, I wasn't in a hurry. And if I don't find homes for my plants, we do have a big plant fair in March. I know, it's a long time off, but it is a great venue for trading - much to the chagrin of those who are trying to sell their plants. When I sell my plants, it is usually for a dollar or two, just to cover the cost of growing media. Sharing is more important to me. Kim, everything I read says this plant is frost tender and grows in zones 9-11. If you can keep it in a pot and bring it in for the winter, I think it will do fine. These guys were quite manageable before going into the ground. Can you folks message me? I have tried to set my profile so anyone can message or email me. If that doesn't work - and please give it a try just so I can see if it works - you can email me at crenda at AOL dot com. (Can I type my actual email address?)...See Morekcandmilo
