Wall mounted upper cabinet over bathroom vanity? Design delimma

We're doing a remodel on a smallish master bathroom with a 72" long vanity and want to put an upper cabinet over the vanity between the sinks however there is only about 20" between the two sinks. Most of the designs I've seen have the uppers sitting on top of the vanity but to me, it makes more sense to just mount them on the wall, similar to a kitchen cabinet but lower of course. This would also prevent any damage to the bottom of the cabinet from splashing water. We also plan to do two toned cabinets with a dark lower and a white upper. I just can't find any photos of my idea and wonder why it isn't done more often this way. We really need the storage. Would this look too odd?
