I agree with #1 thru #3 #4 looks like Populus balsamifera (Balsam Poplar) to me. #5 I agree, Tilia americana #6 Most likely Pyrus calleryana - Callery Pear, which is known to many erroneously as "Bradford Pear" because that's the oldest, best selling cultivar. Agree with #7 and #8 #9 Eleagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive #6 and #9 are aggressive exotic invasives which you should consider trying to eradicate, not transplanting. Also, I'd say it's tempting to transplant wild growing trees and shrubs and it can be done with care, but more often than not it ends in failure. Many wild established trees and shrubs, even when still young, resent the root disturbance and don't adjust well and end up dying or taking several years to recover. Some species are exceptions though and it doesn't always end that way, but like I said often times it does. Out of the trees and shrubs you listed, I'd think the smaller Blueberries have the best chance at being transplanted and would behave the best in the landscape.

For my part, I'm just happy to see a rather nuanced discussion unfolding here. I see I'm not alone in being frustrated with some of the unintended consequences of the "natives only" movement, even though to a large extent, I'm a part of that movement, or at least a supporter of its main tenets. I think it really comes down to the fact that there are a few really bad actors, and then a whole bunch of stuff somewhere in the middle. I'm a big fan of Norway spruce-obviously not a native tree-and I know of some woods which are mostly native, but have a few big , old monsters of this species mixed in. In my view, absolutely not a problem, in any way. But those same woods are truly being "choked" by common buckthorn. That will be their demise, as that plant really does have the ability to crowd everything else out. It just depends on the situation, but to not realize there is a problem with non-native, invasive plant species proliferating in the environment indicates that you, OP, just haven't yet seen the light. Since you're interested enough in the topic to bring it up, I suspect you will in time come to see the havoc. A part of it really depends on your managing to fall in love with the native plant communities which have not yet been destroyed. Then once you cross that threshold, I think it will become clear what something like Callery pear, garlic mustard, or common buckthorn is doing to the landscape. +oM

Ha! TYerrene, you have just stated the very thing that happened to me in a large stream restoration project in one of our ravines here in town. So, a native restoration company was hired for this largish project. The dirt work went okay...not great, but okay. Then it was plant time. Whoo boy, I guarantee you we won't be calling those folks back. Sugar maples were on the plant list. They brought up Norway maples! It gets worse: The lead on this project, a woman who shall remain nameless, had the gall to argue with me as to the "true" identity of the maples they brought up. I calmly snapped a petiole, showed them the milky white sap, and as far as I was concerned, it was case closed. Ah ah, not by a long shot. They "consulted" with the supplier of the bunk stock, who said the reason I was confused (yes, it was alleged that I was confused) was because this was a cultivar! Oh....that explains it! In another fun moment, in fact three different times, M*rcy was listing the plants they would be bringing next. Three different times, she said chokeberry. Each time, I said, 'now M*rcy, chokeberry is a nice shrub and it is native to our area. But the plant list says choke cherry, not chokeberry. Well, I'm sure you know what comes next....a trailer full of hundreds of chokeberries! Luckily for all concerned, the DNR guy who had the ultimate say on this was okay with that substitution. And they were nice shrubs. So 400 and some chokeberries went in instead of the plant listed on the work order! But that Norway maple thing was the corker. So, the lead engineer on the job, not knowing my history all that well, brought in a certified arborist to make the final determination. Imagine how it felt to have verification provided by a person who had-in honest truth-learned most of what they knew from me! More hilarity ensued! +oM

I sowed the Sisyrinchium this past december, still waiting to see if they germinate. They should come up this spring right? I dont expect them to flower this year but at least I can get 30 of them, a small colony, in the ground growing and preparing to flower next year. I wintersowed them in a flat last year too, but my row cover ripped and made like a chute that directed water straight into the tray, and a lot of the soil, and presumably seeds too, washed away. No germination from that tray.
