builder giving me the mcds dollar menu hvac system?
Comments (8)Thanks for the replies guys. After reading countless threads on this great forum, I think I've determined I've been looking at this the wrong way. My builder gave me the model numbers above and with prices for upgrades. Duel Fuel, increased AFUE, variable speed fan, etc.... I've been trying to crank up the AFUE without looking at what type of system would benefit me in my climate area. So I guess I need help from you all on determining if I should go for a high AFUE furnace like the XV95 or Duel Fuel and utilize the heat pump as much as possible since our winters don't have too many days below 40 here. I know I saw a calculator to determine this with what gas and ac costs are in my area, but I'm a noob and could definitely be pointed in the right direction. Here are some specifics of my house, my builder did not provide me with a J load calculation either. Can they provide that on a NEW house being built? I just don't know these things and what I should be asking for. I just don't want the builder to get over on me and charge me crazy prices for upgrades. I've asked the builder to let me talk to the HVAC guy, IMO they should be telling me what type of system would be the best in my area, no? They're the ones who are the experts and can recommend what type of system based on energy costs would be the best. Am I asking too much? 3412 sq. feet 1 story house, 28 windows(all LowE366), 1/2 inch spray foam on all walls with R13 batting over it. He wants to do dual zone with the 1st zone covering about 1400 sq. feet and the 2nd zone covering the rest(2000). The house is being built in Southeastern Virginia near the coast. Thanks for any help you guys can provide, Dale...See MoreHelp me design a new HVAC system. 1950's Cape Cod
Comments (13)Yeah, I thought about some kind of pressure test, but from what I could tell, it would have taken some extensive repair work just to put the system back to a loop of some kind worthy of being tested. So, it's too late now anyway. The Base Board is gone. It really was a mess, and if I ever want to, I could always add some clean new radiators or base boards to the rooms that need it. That being said, I have a decision to make: Option #1 - Variable Speed Air Handler Model#FE4ANF003Twith a 3-Ton, 16 SEER 2 Stage Heat Pump with Air Conditioneing Unit Model#286BNA036. Option #2 - Variable Speed Air Handler Model#FE4ANF005Twith a 3-Ton,20 SEER Inverter Heat Pump with Air Conditioneing Unit Model#280ANV036 Both Systems Equiped with Evolution Zone Controls for 2-Zone Heating and Cooling System. 15 KW Heat Strip ect. Option to add Humidifier and Media Filter +$1,000. The installer did an operating cost analysis and it showed the Extreme System (20 SEER) being just a bit better in cooling, but $900/year less in heating. Which to I pick?...See MoreExtreme Price Difference on 'same' HVAC System
Comments (12)Thanks again. I feel we fall somewhere in the middle of your two descriptions. Our design was created with Southern exposure, solar gain, ample overhang, high efficiency, quality construction, etc. in mind. Architecture and aesthetics undoubtedly played a major role. I don't think we will be LEED certified but it is not your average house. That being said, we did not begin with our expected monthly utility bill as the basis for design. I think we have been reasonably responsible with our design choices thus far. Hence the Geo system. I, not knowing the trade inside and out, am just trying to get the most comfort (and pleasure) out of our system. I think that the higher end system will, without a doubt, provide the level I expect. What I am trying to glean is the sacrifices we would make if we spend less. I realize that the desuper heater and boiler will provide more consistent heat in the basement and that it will also be a more efficient back up/supplemental heat on the very cold days. The question becomes how much less comfortable will the basement be? How many days a year will we need the supplemental heat and is it worth the extra expense. How much better is an Infinity Carrier air handler than the Trane air handler? Will it be noticeably better? I need someone who knows to help me answer these questions. We are not against spending the money if the differences are going to be compromises we regret but we don't know how to figure that out before hand......See MoreWould an HVAC system be a good idea for me? Comments (2)Considering your requirements and the condition of your building you should opt for ductless mini split system with both cooling and heating system. This will solve your problem and you will be comfortable in both weathers....See MoreAustin Air Companie
